Freestyle: 'Middle of Nowhere' stirs imagination ? Honolulu, Hawaii ...

Ava DuVernay?s ?Middle of Nowhere? is a significant film. DuVernay made history this year with her Best Director Award at the Sundance Film Festival, as the first black woman to take this prize. It?s an atmospheric, thoughtfully presented and beautifully acted independent movie, illuminating the experience of imprisonment ? actual and metaphorical.

In the film, a talented medical student puts her dreams on hold while her husband is in prison. The film considers the woman?s story up front, and we don?t know at first why the man is in jail. What we see is the depth of the wife?s passion, her steadfastness, the burden she bears in keeping contact with him and the sacrifices she makes.

With disproportionate numbers of African-American men imprisoned in the United States today, a film that brings to light the way this affects women?s lives is worth your time. But don?t be too comfortable in your expectations.

The movie doesn?t settle for making either the heroine (Emayatzi Corineadli) or her jailed husband (Omari Hardwick) one-dimensional victims. It takes off in less predictable directions, and the pensive Corineadli keeps your attention as she faces up to her situation. The handsome David Oyelowo also plays an instrumental part in this story.

Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times calls it ?classic filmmaking of a completely different sort.? The New York Times called it ?soul-stirring.? And now the film is being bandied about as a possible Oscar contender in the Best Screenplay category.

The filmmaker?s own story is also inspiring. An accomplished publicist, she did not go to film school, but has said that she learned by observing on set with clients that included Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood and Michael Mann.

See the film at Honolulu Museum?s Doris Duke Theatre, with screenings tomorrow through Dec. 7. (Click here for showtimes and to buy tickets online.) It serves as a preview for the museum?s African American Film Festival, coming up in February.

I THINK you?ll like the music as well. DuVernay knows music: She?s the director of the 2008 hip hop documentary ?This is The Life,? and of 2010 BET/TV One docs ?My Mic Sounds Nice? ? on female hip hop artists ? and ?Essence Music Festival 2010.?

I went looking for the soundtrack artists, taken by the moody, sensual aura the movie?s music created ? most by women artists. They include the amazing Little Dragon and Goapele ? both have performed in Honolulu ? as well as other dreamy acts like MelodiousFly and Ra-Re Valverde (check out this hypnotic track, ?On Time?). I?ve been listening to this music all week!

I was especially drawn in by the mysterious post-punk/live electro of Spektrum, an outspoken British trio headed by singer Lola Olafisoye ? and was pleased to discover a Pacific connection, as Spektrum drummer Isaac Tucker is from New Zealand. The band is playing several shows in New Zealand this month, culminating with New Year?s Eve. Too bad I don?t have any vacation left! Let me share some of this awesomeness with you. Meat Allergy Reaches Regions without Ticks

Experts aren't sure why a meat allergy linked to tick bites is reaching areas beyond the ticks' range. Gretchen Cuda Kroen reports

Ticks are bad news. They spread Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. And they?re also responsible for an unusual food allergy?to meat. Yup, get bit by one of these buggers and it could be bye-bye BBQ.

The strange allergy has been linked to the particularly aggressive Lone Star tick. These tiny ticks are found primarily in the southeastern United States, the same place as most of the known cases of the meat allergy. Or so it seemed.

Researchers from Viracor, a company offering a diagnostic test for the allergy, found that the allergy is also appearing in places without the ticks?as far away as Hawaii. Experts aren?t entirely sure why. The ticks may be spreading, the allergy can possibly be triggered by other tick species or people are frequently getting bitten while traveling. The data was presented at the meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

The bottom line? Regardless of where you live, if you?re going to be outdoors and you love meat, get out the DEET.

For some feathered dinosaurs, bigger not necessarily better

Every kid knows that giant carnivores like Tyrannosaurus rex dominated the Cretaceous period, but they weren't the only big guys in town. Giant plant-eating theropods ? close relatives of both T. rex and today's birds ? also lived and thrived alongside their meat-eating cousins. Now researchers have started looking at why dinosaurs that abandoned meat in favor of vegetarian diets got so big, and their results may call conventional wisdom about plant-eaters and body size into question.

Scientists have theorized that bigger was better when it came to plant eaters, because larger digestive tracts would allow dinosaurs to maximize the nutrition they could extract from high-fiber, low-calorie food. Therefore, natural selection may have favored increasing body sizes in groups of animals that went meatless.

Three groups of giant feathered theropods from the Cretaceous period seemed to follow that rule of thumb ? the biggest specimens were also the plant-eaters. Lindsay Zanno, research assistant professor of biology at North Carolina State University and director of the Paleontology & Geology Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, and Peter Makovicky, associate curator of paleontology at the Field Museum in Chicago, decided to see if diet was the determining factor when it came to size. Makovicky notes that "Having three closely related lineages of dinosaurs adapting to herbivory over the same geological time span and showing evidence of increasing size provided a near perfect test case."

Zanno and Makovicky estimated body mass for 47 extinct species of feathered dinosaur, representing three major groups that abandoned a strictly meat-eating diet ? ornithomimosaurs ("bird-mimics"), oviraptorosaurs ("egg-thieves"), and the bizarre therizinosaurs ("scythe-lizards"). Most species in these lineages also possessed a toothless beak, three-toed feet, and shorter tails than your average dinosaur, making them look a lot like modern birds.

All three groups evolved gigantic proportions: the largest oviraptorosaur weighed over 7,000 pounds, and the biggest ornithomimosaurs and therizinosaurs topped out at over 13,000 pounds. "The largest feathered dinosaurs were more than 100 times more massive than your average person," says Zanno. "The reality is that for most of us, it is downright difficult to imagine a feathered animal of gigantic proportions."

The researchers also found that average body mass did increase in these groups over time (on average, the earliest members were smallest and the last species to evolve were among the largest). But this simple correlation didn't indicate whether large size was an evolutionary advantage.

To test whether these groups were being driven to get bigger by natural selection, Zanno and Makovicky fitted different evolutionary models to the data, looking to see which model best described the patterns of body mass from ancestor species to descendant species. They found that these theropod groups were experimenting with different body masses as they evolved, with some getting bigger, while others were getting smaller. In short, there was no clear-cut drive to get big ? size seemed to provide no overwhelming advantage during the evolution of these animals.

The researchers' results appear in Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

"Results of our study don't rule out diet as affecting body mass, but do seem to indicate that fluctuating environmental conditions over time were trumping the benefit of becoming a giant," Zanno says. "The long and short of it is that for plant-eating theropods, bigger wasn't always better."

"Where resources permitted, these animals could get as big as elephants, but that clearly was not the case in all environments and time periods," says Makovicky. "Factors such as resource abundance and competition with other herbivores likely played a more significant role." He added that uneven sampling in the fossil record, such as preferential preservation of smaller species in earlier time periods and larger species in later ones, could also impact the results.

A ban on anchors, a long way to go

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) ? The putt was meaningless because it was the final hole of a pro-am in what amounts to an 18-man exhibition at the end of the year, even though ranking points are available at the World Challenge. But it was hard not to look at the end of the putter pressed into the belly of Keegan Bradley.

The decision to ban the anchor stroke used for belly putters and broom-handle putters was not because of Bradley, even though he became the face of a style that was gaining popularity, not to mention credibility.

Bradley became the first player to win a major using the belly putter when he rammed in a 35-foot birdie putt on the 17th at Atlanta Athletic Club in 2011 during a remarkable comeback. It was in the news conference after the PGA Championship that Bradley spoke about a number of players on the Nationwide Tour who were using belly putters. The next year, Webb Simpson and Ernie Els won majors with a belly putter.

The U.S. Golf Association and Royal & Ancient, who announced Wednesday a proposed rule that would ban anchoring the club to the body, said the major champions were only part of what got their attention. Mike Davis of the USGA and Peter Dawson of the R&A both spoke to a spike in number of players using such putting strokes, how it trickled down to younger golfers, and their concern that the stroke was taking too much of the skill out of the game.

Players could still use a broom-handle or belly putter ? as long as it is not pressed against their body to create the effect of a hinge.

"We believe a player should hold the club away from his body and swing it freely," Davis said. "Golf is a game of skill and challenge, and we think that's an important part of it."

What's next?

As for the rule, the governing bodies will take comments over the next three months to see if it needs to be changed, scrapped or whether the proposal is fine the way it is. Then, it would be approved by the organizations, though it would not take effect until 2016.

What's next for Bradley?

"I'm going to have to really in the next couple of years figure out a way that's going to be best for me to putt," Bradley said.

He might end up shaving a few inches off the putter so the stroke is similar, except that it doesn't press against his stomach. Fred Couples has a belly putter that rests against his stomach, but the butt of the club moves freely. It is not hinged. Couples was not sure if that would be legal under the new rule, though he could just imagine the number of phone calls if he was shown on TV using that stroke.

Then again, the odds of the 53-year-old Couples even playing the Champions Tour in 2016 was enough to make him laugh.

U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson already has been using a short putter while at home, and he said he would continue to make the transition and go to the conventional putter when he feels comfortable with it. Bradley has been using a belly putter since he was at college, and he laments the five years of practice with it going to waste.

"Who knows? Maybe there's some way to putt better," Bradley said. "I see myself finding a way to putt."

Bradley and Simpson are in a difficult spot, for neither wants to look like a group of dissenters. Both said they have respect for the USGA and R&A, and Bradley wanted to make that clear Wednesday at Sherwood Country Club when he said, "I do understand the USGA is trying to protect the game. I knew they're not doing something maliciously to hurt me or other guys."

But this already is shaping up to be a divisive issue, from industry leaders worried about the growth of golf to players who have been using these putters for years.

Carl Pettersson of Sweden and Tim Clark of South Africa have used broom-handle putters all their careers, and they have talked about a possible legal recourse. Neither could be reached for comment. Pettersson was in South Africa for the Nedbank Challenge and did not return a phone call.

"Any competitive player likes to have an extra advantage," Matt Kuchar said. "I think you're going find anyone using the short putter is glad, and anyone using the belly putter or long putter is not happy."

Kuchar used a mid-length putter that rested against his left arm when he won The Players Championship. That style is OK.

Couples wasn't sure golf needed such a rule. His argument is that if the anchored stroke was that much of an advantage, everyone would be using it. He somehow managed to work Rick Barry of the Golden State Warriors into the conversation.

He referred to him as one of the greatest free-throw shooters in NBA history, famous for his underhand shot at the foul line.

"Do you see other guys copying him?" Couples said. "Is Keegan Bradley the best putter on tour? Is Webb? So it's a look. They can say all they want, but it's a look. An advantage? You think guys out here are dumb? What's an advantage? You would think if this was such an advantage, everyone would be using it."

None of the top 20 players on the PGA Tour's most reliable putting statistic used an anchored putting stroke.

"In my opinion, they haven't screwed up golf yet, and I don't think this will screw it up," Couples said. "But I feel bad for Keegan Bradley, because I'll tell you what: If they banned it tomorrow and we played a tournament, I think I'll be a better player than Keegan. And I don't think that's fair."

In the meantime, the World Challenge gets under way Thursday as the final event of the year for Woods, and the last chance for this 18-man field to earn ranking points. Some will go to the Shark Shootout next week in Florida. The others won't be seen again until next year, either in Hawaii or the desert.

The anchored putting stroke will come again. The debate most likely won't end anytime soon.

Moody's eyeing progress of sin tax bill in PHL Congress | Economy ...

Global debt watcher Moody?s Investors Service is keeping an eye on the sin tax measure now pending in the Philippine Congress where it is up for discussions at the bicameral conference committee level.
?
Moving forward, what Moody?s wants to see ? in particular ? is how the legislated sin tax measure would impact on and sustain the government?s fiscal needs, said Christian de Guzman, Moody?s lead analyst for the Philippines, in response to an e-mailed query by reporters in Manila. ?
?
The measure seeks to increase taxes on tobacco products and alcoholic beverages over five years.
?
?We would see the actual passage of the bill as positive as it would help to increase the government?s revenues,? Singapore-based De Guzman noted.
?
?Relative to other countries with similar ratings, the Philippine government?s revenues are far lower and thus have an adverse impact on key ratios of fiscal sustainability that we monitor,? he added.
?
Last month, Moody?s upgraded its ratings on Philippine foreign and local currency long-term bonds to a notch below investment grade (Ba1 from Ba2), which confirmed the earlier ratings given by Fitch Ratings and Standard & Poor?s.

?I think it?s also important to note that the dimensions of the sin tax bill post-bicameral conference are as yet unclear,? said De Guzman.

Because the additional revenues will fund healthcare spending, the actual passage of the bill would have neutral impact on the deficit, according to Moody?s.

Still, the measure?s actual passage into law bodes well for the government?s efforts to improve revenues, according to the analyst.

Such development reflects a concrete example of the 15th Congress actually enacting a new legislation in aid of government?s finances, De Guzman added.

?The 15th Congress had not achieved any significant developments with regards to revenue previously, while the 14th Congress was characterized by the passage of several revenue eroding measures,? he noted.

The bicameral conference committee will reconcile both versions of the Sin Tax Reform Bill approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives. At climate conference, UN warns that thawing permafrost will cause increased global warming

DOHA, Qatar - Thawing permafrost covering almost a quarter of the northern hemisphere could "significantly amplify global warming" at a time when the world is already struggling to reign in rising greenhouse gases, a U.N. report said on Tuesday.

The warning comes as United Nations climate negotiations enter a second day, with the focus on the Kyoto Protocol ? a legally-binding emissions cap that expires this year and remains the most significant international achievement in the fight against global warming. Countries are hoping to negotiate an extension to the pact that runs until at least 2020.

The U.N. said the potential hazards of carbon dioxide and methane emissions from warming permafrost has until now not been factored into climate models. It is calling for a special U.N. climate panel to assess the warming and for the creation of "national monitoring networks and adaptation plans" to help better understand the threat.

In the past, land with permafrost experienced thawing on the surface during summertime, but now scientists are witnessing thaws that reach up to 10 feet deep due to warmer temperatures. The softened earth releases gases from decaying plants that have been stuck below frozen ground for millennia.

"Permafrost is one of the keys to the planet's future because it contains large stores of frozen organic matter that, if thawed and released into the atmosphere, would amplify current global warming and propel us to a warmer world," said UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner in a statement.

At the climate talks in Doha, Qatar, negotiations over Kyoto started on Tuesday. Many rich countries such as Japan, Russia and Canada have refused to endorse the extension, and talks are expected to be heated. The United States was the lone industrialized country not to join the original pact because it did not include other big greenhouse gas emitters like China.

In its current form, a pact that once incorporated all industrialized countries except the United States would now only include the European Union, Australia and several smaller countries which together account for less than 15 per cent of global emissions.

"We want to send a very clear message. We will not accept a second commitment period that is not worth the paper that it's written on," Asad Rehman of the Climate Justice Now! network told delegates. "We will not collude in a lie if that locks us into eight years of inaction and that condemns people and planet to a climate catastrophe."

The Japanese delegation defended its decision not to sign onto a Kyoto extension, insisting it would be better to focus on coming to an agreement by 2015 that would require all countries to do their part to keep global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees C (3.6 degrees F), compared to preindustrial times.

"As we have been explaining, only developed countries are legally bound by the Kyoto Protocol and their emissions are only 26 per cent," said Masahiko Horie, speaking for the Japanese delegation.

"If we continue the same, only one quarter of the world is legally bound and three quarters of countries are not bound at all," he said. "Japan will not be participating in a second commitment period because, what is important, is for the world is to formulate a new framework which is fair and effective and which all parties will join."

The position of Japan and other developed countries has the potential to reignite the battles between rich and poor nations that have doomed past efforts to reach a deal. So far that hasn't happened, but countries like Brazil are warning that it will be difficult for poor nations to do their part if they continue watching industrialized nations shy away from legally-binding pacts like Kyoto.

"This is a very serious thing," said Andre Correa do Lago, who heads the Brazil delegation and is the director general for Environment and Special Affairs in the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

"If rich countries which have the financial means, have technology, have a stable population, already have a large middle class, if these countries think they cannot reduce and work to fight climate change, how can they ever think that developing countries can do it," do Lago said. "That is why the Kyoto Protocol has to be kept alive. It's the bar. If we take it out, we have what people call the Wild West. Everybody will do what they want to do. With everyone doing what they want to do, you are not going get the reductions necessary.

Bigfoot part human, DNA report claims

Genetic testing confirms the legendary Bigfoot is a human relative that arose some 15,000 years ago ? at least according to a press release issued by a company called DNA Diagnostics detailing supposed work by a Texas veterinarian.

The report from Melba S. Ketchum also suggests such cryptids had sex with modern human females that resulted in hairy hominin hybrids, but the scientific community is dubious about her claim.

"A team of scientists can verify that their five-year-long DNA study, currently under peer-review, confirms the existence of a novel hominin hybrid species, commonly called 'Bigfoot' or 'Sasquatch,' living in North America," the release reads. "Researchers' extensive DNA sequencing suggests that the legendary Sasquatch is a human relative that arose approximately 15,000 years ago."

For her study, Ketchum obtained three "whole nuclear genomes from purported Sasquatch samples. The genome sequencing shows that Sasquatch mtDNA is identical to modern Homo sapiens, but Sasquatch nuDNA is a novel, unknown hominin related to Homo sapiens and other primate species." (Mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA, is the DNA that resides in the cell's energy-producing structures, and is typically passed down from mothers, while nuclear DNA, nuDNA, resides in the cells' nuclei and is passed down from both parents to offspring.)

"Our data indicate that the North American Sasquatch is a hybrid species, the result of males of an unknown hominin species crossing with female Homo sapiens," the statement reads. [ Infographic: Tracking Belief in Bigfoot ]

Any proof?
It's a fascinating theory.

So where's the evidence? Well, there is none. Not yet, anyway: Ketchum's research has not appeared in any peer-reviewed scientific journal, and there's no indication when that might happen. If the data are good and the science is sound, any reputable science journal would jump at the chance to be the first to publish this groundbreaking information. Until then, Ketchum has refused to let anyone else see her evidence.

Of course the history of Bigfoot is rife with exaggerated and premature claims about proof of the creature's existence. For decades, various types of evidence have been offered as final, definitive proof, ranging from Bigfoot hair to blood to dead bodies. Without exception, the evidence has always been a hoax, misidentification or inconclusive.

Because Ketchum has released no information at all about her findings (nor have they been examined by outside experts), it's impossible to evaluate the validity of her conclusions. But an important clue can be found in her statement that "Sasquatch mtDNA is identical to modern Homo sapiens."

If the mitochontrial DNA is identical to Homo sapiens (i.e., modern humans), then this suggests one of two options. The first, endorsed by Ketchum, is that Bigfoot ancestors had sex with women about 15,000 years ago and created a half-human hybrid species currently hiding across North America. There is, however, another, simpler interpretation of such results: The samples were contaminated. Whatever the sample originally was ? Bigfoot, bear, human or something else ? it's possible that the people who collected and handled the specimens accidentally introduced their DNA into the sample, which can easily occur with something as innocent as a spit, sneeze or cough. No one outside of Ketchum's team knows how this alleged Bigfoot DNA was collected, from where or by whom. It could have been collected by the world's top forensics experts, or by a pair of amateur Bigfoot buffs with no evidence-gathering training.

Confirming it's Bigfoot
How did the team definitively determine that the samples were from a Bigfoot? Did they take a blood or saliva sample from a living Bigfoot ? If so, how did they get that close, and why didn't they simply capture it or photograph it? If the samples were found in the wild, how do they know it wasn't left by another animal ? or possibly even a hunter, hiker or camper who left human genetic material?

Previous alleged Bigfoot samples subjected to DNA analysis have been deemed "unknown" or "unidentified." However, "unknown" or "unidentified" results do not mean "Bigfoot." There are many reasons why a DNA sample might come back unknown, including that it was contaminated or too degraded by environmental conditions. Or it could simply mean that the animal it came from was not among the reference samples that the laboratory used for comparison. There is no reference sample of Bigfoot DNA to compare it with, so by definition, there cannot be a conclusive match.

Ketchum also issued a statement requesting that the U.S. government immediately recognize Bigfoot as "an indigenous people and immediately protect their human and Constitutional rights against those who would see in their physical and cultural differences a 'license' to hunt, trap, or kill them." Since no Bigfoot has ever been hunted, trapped or killed, it's not clear that the creatures ? if they exist ? require any special federal protection.

Ketchum's is not the only genetics-based project intended to find Bigfoot. Earlier this year, researchers from Oxford University and the Lausanne Museum of Zoology announced they were collecting samples of alleged Bigfoot and Yeti hair for genetic identification. Oxford geneticist Bryan Sykes collected materials from the public from May through September, and is currently conducting DNA analysis. Once the results are in, he plans to submit his results to a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

If Ketchum has the definitive proof she claims, the world will soon know about it, and Bigfoot will be proven once and for all. On the other hand, if the evidence never appears, or is inconclusive and flawed, the search will continue.

Kettleman City activists seek to block expansion of toxic dump

KETTLEMAN CITY, Calif. ? Environmental activists and leaders of this impoverished community, outraged by unreported spills of cancer-causing chemicals, are trying to block expansion of a toxic waste dump that is the largest of its kind west of the Mississippi River.

Activists say the history of the troubled Chemical Waste Management dump and new citations alleging failure to report 72 hazardous materials spills over the last four years show the company cannot be trusted to protect public health. The state Department of Toxic Substances Control issued the citations earlier this month ? and is the agency that must rule on the proposed expansion.

"If this new case is not enough to demonstrate a pattern and practice of violations, I don't know what else the agency would need to see," said Ingrid Brostrom, an attorney with the Center on Race, Poverty and the Environment. The 1,600-acre dump is just off Interstate 5 in Central California.

Company officials say the 30-year-old landfill is among the most heavily regulated and monitored facilities of its kind, overseen by nearly a dozen state and federal agencies. During a recent tour of the facility, Bob Henry, Chemical Waste senior district manager, said the spills in question were small, caused by third parties and cleaned up on the site.

State regulators "are simply saying we were supposed to report the spills verbally and with a written report," Henry said. "Is this a major issue? No."

Brian Johnson, the state agency's deputy director of enforcement, disagreed. "It is very serious," he said. "We view these violations as consistent with a troubling pattern and emblematic of a system failure on Chemical Waste's part."

Residents of this close-knit community of 1,500, most of them low-income farmworkers, have long distrusted the facility 3.2 miles from the city. They believe the dump, the only one in California licensed to accept carcinogenic polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, is responsible for serious illnesses, birth defects and deaths among children.

A survey by state health investigators ruled out the dump as the reason 11 babies were born with illnesses including cleft palates and other physical deformities in Kettleman City between September 2007 and March 2010. Three of the babies died.

Despite those findings, many residents blame the landfill. This month, the city has rallied around Ivonne Rangel, whose 2-year-old son Daniel died of leukemia Nov. 12.

Standing last week beside a living-room shrine composed of cheery portraits of her son, fresh roses, toys, rosary beads and candles, Rangel said, "The first thing that came to my mind after my son was diagnosed with aggressive leukemia was that toxic waste dump.

"They say there is no connection between our sick children and the dump, but that is a big lie," Rangel said, her eyes filled with tears.

Family and friends held a memorial service and funeral for the boy several days ago.

Maria Saucedo, whose daughter, Ashley, was born with a cleft palate and other ailments and died at 11 months, said she felt "offended and let down by a system that would even consider expanding the dump after all the legal problems and children born with defects."

Chemical Waste officials say the facility is running out of room. With less available space, the company has reduced the amount of hazardous materials it receives from throughout the state to roughly 120,000 tons a year. About 1% of that is PCBs, which are found in electrical transformers, voltage regulators and additives to lubricating and cutting oils.

In 1985, the Environmental Protection Agency fined the company $2.1 million for violations that included operating additional landfills and waste ponds without authorization.

In 2003, the waste dump was among 22 such facilities that California EPA officials determined emitted unusually high levels of radiation.

In 2005, the company was fined $10,000 for violating federal PCB monitoring requirements. It was cited again in 2007 for failing to properly analyze incoming wastes, storm water runoff and leachate for PCBs, and for failing to properly calibrate analytical equipment.

In 2010, the EPA levied a $302,100 fine against the facility for failing to properly manage PCBs. A year later, the facility agreed to pay $400,000 in fines and spend $600,000 on laboratory upgrades needed to properly manage hazardous materials.

Maricela Mares-Alatorre, an activist with Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice and a Kettleman City mother of two, said activists hope the latest citations will be "an eye-opener for state regulators."

Becoming an electrician starts with getting the right schooling. One can start quite early, even in High School. Many vocational programs in secondary schools have an electrical program. Following High School graduation, one can enter a program at a college to further their learning. Community colleges often have excellent trades program, including electrical. In addition to their typical general education courses like math and English, students will take practical courses where they learn both the science behind the trade and also get to apply and learn new skills in hands-on work. If one desires to learn more about the scientific end of things, they can attend a four year college that offers advanced programs like electrical engineering or similar majors. Community colleges are great because they offer students practical experience.

One can also do some extra work on their own to increase their skills and education. It is a great idea to find an experienced individual who works in the field and get close to them. An experienced worker can offer electrician training in the form of an apprenticeship or might be able to hire a student to work for them. They can also share the pros and cons of the industry, as well as stories from on the job. This will give the young student a better idea of what daily life is like as an electrical worker, and help them decide if this is really the field that they want to devote their life to. Working with a professional can help one meet others in the field and perhaps potential future customers. The pro may also have some suggestions for training programs or courses that the aspiring electrician can take advantage of. They can serve as a reference for the student's resume.

Before one can be successful in industry, they must have to proper education and training. Fortunately, budding electrical workers have many options to help them reach their goals and better themselves.

Scored at Home Depot ~ picked up nearly everything but the paint I went there for.

Move over Best Buy.

I?ve been known to roll out my share of flat-screened TVs and under $200 computers for the kids, but the deals I decided to chase this year were in the paint department on Black Friday.

Found a lotta? folks who are geared the same way.

Patti Bolter picks out holiday plants before her retail shift begins at Ross.

Robert Ybarra made a beeline to the ladder section, affirming he was chasing deals for gadgets to use around the house. Patti Bolter was spotted loading plants and a miniature Christmas tree into the back of her car outside the Home Depot in Moreno Valley.

Patricia Fekay picks up her holiday paint

?This is the only shopping I?ll do today,? she said. ?My shift at Ross starts at 11,? she said.

I aimed my cart toward the paint department ? filling it with red twist CFL holiday light bulbs, three solar-powered, ?I?ll be home for Christmas? candles, a ?Ho-Ho-Ho? doormat by Martha Stewart, Poinsettia Elite plant, two Wavy Decoblocks and a Husky 20? tool caddy for $1.98 ? and found Patricia Fekay, a kindred spirit.

Fekay was leaning over a stainless steel counter laden with multiple pints of mixed paint colors ? enough to create a holiday rainbow ? and I felt vindicated.

When I asked her why she was here, instead of the mall, she replied, ?It?s what I do.?

Fekay buys paint every year ?round this time to create holiday windows for businesses. ?I?ve traveled from here to Yuma, Arizona,? she explained. ?I?ll draw whatever people want; and I love it.?

As Fekay dashed away to paint the windows on a new business, Empire Loan & Jewelry in Moreno Valley, clerk Reyjon Anderson said it?s been an exceptionally busy day.

?Paint?s been flying out of the store,? he said, and it?s not even on sale.

As for me? I took out a few paint samples. And, a paint tin filled with tool-shaped sugar cookies. Cute!

Total bill for 13 items, $67.

Memories, as they say, priceless.

Next stop, Best Buy.

VA Home Loan Applications and the Holiday Shopping Season | VA ...

Today is Black Friday, the biggest retail shopping day of the year and a time when many find incredible bargains at their favorite shops. With people camping out in advance of the post-Turkey Day shopping spree, and many getting their credit cards ready for a big round of holiday gift-buying, it?s sometimes difficult to slow down during Black Friday until all the bargains have been exhausted.

But if you?re considering applying for a VA home loan in the near future, you may wish to rethink your holiday shopping season plans. Borrowers who aren?t sure about their debt-to-income ratio need to be wary of running up large amounts of credit card debt in the six to 12 months leading up to a VA home loan application. If your debt-to-income ratio is too high, it could put your VA home loan at risk.

The holiday shopping season is ?safer? for those who know?and are comfortable with?their debt to income ratio as it applies to a VA home loan. If you have not done the numbers, consider the following information from VALoans.com on the subject:

Texans top Lions 34-31 in OT after coach's mistake

DETROIT (AP) ? Justin Forsett scooted up the middle and lunged forward while a couple of Detroit defenders closed in to stop him. His knee hit the ground, but the Houston running back hopped up quickly and took off toward the end zone.

"I know now that I was down, but I didn't think I was during the play," Forsett said. "I didn't think my knee hit, and there was no whistle, so I kept going."

Forsett had nothing to lose by getting up and running ? and unbelievably, the 81-yard scoring play stood. The officials missed the call, giving the Texans a touchdown, and Detroit coach Jim Schwartz inadvertently wiped out any chance of a replay review by throwing his challenge flag when he wasn't allowed to.

That was all Houston needed to start a second-half comeback, and the Texans went on to beat the Lions 34-31 in overtime Thursday.

"Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good," running back Arian Foster said.

AFC South-leading Houston (10-1) has won five straight ? two in a row in OT ? and if a handful of teams lose, the Texans could be in the playoffs by the end of this weekend.

The Lions led 24-14 in the third quarter when Forsett scored on his long run. Replays clearly showed Forsett's knee touching the ground around his own 25 ? Detroit players even slowed up, assuming the play was over.

Forsett got up and ran all the way to the end zone.

Scoring plays are reviewed automatically ? but if a coach throws a challenge flag like Schwartz did, the review is negated and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty is assessed. So the touchdown stood despite obvious evidence it shouldn't have.

Detroit (4-7) still led 24-21 after Forsett's touchdown, and the Lions went up 31-24 on Joique Bell's 23-yard TD run with 13:31 left in the fourth.

Houston rallied, tying it at 31 on Foster's 1-yard run with 1:55 to play. That touchdown capped a 15-play, 97-yard drive that included a conversion on fourth-and-7.

"Had our opportunities to win it multiple times. Both teams did," Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford said. "It was a great football game. Didn't catch many breaks and couldn't capitalize on a couple we needed to."

Texans kicker Shayne Graham missed from 51 yards in overtime, and Detroit's Jason Hanson hit the right upright from 47. Graham finally connected from 32 to win it.

Detroit extended its losing streak in its annual Thanksgiving showcase to nine.

Hanson's miss came on third down after the Lions had lost 3 yards on a second-down run. The Lions sent the veteran kicker onto the field instead of trying to move the ball a bit closer.

"We didn't want to give up a negative play, and they'd been trying really hard to strip the ball, so we didn't want to risk a turnover," Schwartz said.

The Lions were hoping a three-game homestand would help revive their playoff hopes, but they lost against Green Bay last weekend and couldn't hold on against the Texans.

If the Lions didn't have enough problems, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh could be in trouble with the league again after his left cleat connected with Houston quarterback Matt Schaub's groin area in the first quarter.

"I really don't have anything to say about that play or that person," Schaub said.

Suh was on his chest, taken down by an offensive lineman, when he extended his left foot below Schaub's belt.

It wasn't clear on replays whether the kick was intentional. Suh didn't stick around talk to reporters after the game.

Last year on Thanksgiving, Suh was ejected for stomping on the right arm of Green Bay offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith and was suspended for two games. He has been fined in previous seasons for roughing up quarterbacks: Cincinnati's Andy Dalton, Chicago's Jay Cutler and Cleveland's Jake Delhomme.

Schaub stayed in the game, and was 29 of 48 for 315 yards with a 9-yard TD to Owen Daniels that tied it at 14 late in the first half. He also threw an interception.

Houston's Andre Johnson had nine receptions for 188 yards.

Stafford was 31 of 61 for 441 yards with two TDs ? tiebreaking scores to Calvin Johnson and Mike Thomas in the second quarter. It wasn't enough.

"We got what we deserved," Stafford said. "We didn't capitalize on our chances."

NOTES: Lions OT Jeff Backus (right hamstring) was inactive, ending his 186-game starting streak. ... Houston LB Brooks Reed (left groin) and OT Derek Newton (knee) were injured during the game.

Rupert Murdoch sheds some News Corp shares

(Reuters) - News Corp Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch sold about $10 million of the company's Class A shares on November 20, according to a regulatory filing on Wednesday.

The sale of 418,631 Class A shares represent about 5 percent of Murdoch and his family's total Class A.

Murdoch and his family control News Corp through their ownership of about 40 percent of Class B voting shares.

Shares of News Corp, home to 20th Century Fox, Fox TV stations and the Wall Street Journal, have been on a tear up almost 50 percent year over year.

The company is preparing to separate its publishing and entertainment assets next year in a move to appease shareholders who have been pressing the company to shed its troubled newspaper business.

The stock closed down 0.7 percent at $23.82 on Wednesday.
