Drug shows potential to delay onset or progression of Alzheimer's disease

Mar. 11, 2013 ? A research team led by Robert Nagele, PhD, of the New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging (NJISA) at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)-School of Osteopathic Medicine, has demonstrated that the anti-atherosclerosis drug darapladib can significantly reduce leaks in the blood brain barrier. This finding potentially opens the door to new therapies to prevent the onset or the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

Writing in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease (currently in press), the researchers describe findings involving the use of darapladib in animal models that had been induced to develop diabetes mellitus and hypercholesterolemia (DMHC), which are considered to be major risk factors for Alzheimer's disease.

"Diabetes and hypercholesterolemia are associated with an increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier, and it is becoming increasingly clear that this blood-brain barrier breakdown contributes to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's," Nagele said. "Darapladib appears to be able to reduce this permeability to levels comparable to those found in normal, non-DMHC controls, and suggests a link between this permeability and the deposition of amyloid peptides in the brain."

The study involved 28 animal (pig) models that were divided into three groups -- DMHC animals treated with a 10 mg/day dose of darapladib; DMHC animals that received no treatment; and non-DMHC controls. Post-mortem analysis of the brains of the darapladib-treated animals showed significant decreases in blood-brain barrier leakage and in the density of amyloid-positive neurons in the cerebral cortices. Interestingly, the amyloid peptides that leaked into the brain tissue were found almost exclusively in the pyramidal neurons of the cerebral cortex, one of the earliest pathologies of the development of Alzheimer's disease.

"Because our results suggest that these metabolic disorders can trigger neurodegenerative changes through blood-brain barrier compromise, therapies -- such as darapladib -- that can reduce vascular leaks have great potential for delaying the onset or slowing the progression of diseases like Alzheimer's," said the study's lead author, Nimish Acharya, PhD, of the NJISA and the UMDNJ-Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. "The clinical, caregiving and financial impact of such an effect cannot be overestimated."

This study was supported by funding from GlaxoSmithKline through an industry-academic alliance via the Alternative Drug Discovery Initiative with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Donkey Kong hack: Dad tweaks game for daughter

Donkey Kong has plenty of virtues, but one glaring flaw: You can only play as Mario, and you have to rescue the helpless damsel. Until a little girl asked her daddy to fix it.

By Marshall Honorof,?Tech News Daily / March 11, 2013

Mike Mika hacked Donkey Kong so his daughter could play as Pauline, who is usually relegated to the role of damsel in distress. In Mr. Mika's version, Pauline rescues Mario.

While women make up about half of all gamers, the hobby isn't always the friendliest place for female players. In a marketplace dominated by muscle-bound space marines and ineffective female sidekicks, it's not hard to see why women might feel alienated.

Retro gaming is not much better: The old-school game "Donkey Kong" details one of Super Mario's earliest adventures, in which the plumber rescues a woman named Pauline from the titular brutish ape. When one programmer's young daughter asked why she couldn't play as Pauline instead, her father mulled it over and replied with a hacked version of the game, completely reversing the characters' roles.

Game developer Mike Mika has worked on titles for consoles from the Atari 2600 to the Xbox 360. As any good father should, Mika wants to rear his daughter on the classics: The three-year-old knows how to play "Pac-Man" and "Super Mario Bros. 2," but she finds "Donkey Kong" especially enthralling. When his daughter first asked to play as a female character, like she could in "Super Mario Bros. 2," Mika initially dismissed it as impossible.

"But that question!" Mika wrote in a Wired article. "It kept nagging at me. Kids ask parents all the time for things that just aren't possible. But this time, this was different. I'm a game developer by day. I could do this."

Teaming up with fellow Atari developer Kevin Wilson, Mika dove into a program called Tile Layer Pro, which allowed him to deconstruct the assets of "Donkey Kong" using an emulated copy of the game. He encountered a number of difficulties: Pauline's character sprite is taller than Mario's by a fair margin; the background colors did not match Pauline's design, and the "M" for "Mario" next to the bonus score had to be replaced with a "P." [See also: The Best Classic Game Compilations for iPads]

In terms of Internet popularity, the hack has been an unbridled success, garnering scads of admirers on Reddit, YouTube and gaming sites across the Web. Of course, Mika's success has had its ugly side as well: The usual horde of misogynistic trolls have taken to comments sections everywhere, decrying Mika's game as part of a radical feminist or misandrist agenda.

"If this experience has taught me anything," said Mika, "it's that the world could be just a bit more accommodating. And that if something as innocuous as having Mario be saved by Pauline brings out the crazy, maybe we aren't as mature in our view of gender roles as we should be."

More importantly, however, Mika's daughter loves the game. She doesn't quite realize the amount of work that went into the modified version, but is nevertheless delighted to turn the tables and rescue Mario as Pauline.

Sometimes, even daring plumbers need to be saved.

Artisan Denizen: A Little Artistic Self-Improvement

The last time I took an Art class was in high school. I think it's time I took another one. And I found one recently that I want to take: figurative drawing.?

When I took drawing in high school, we did spend a little time on that. It was high school, so our teacher brought in a mannequin. Mainly we focused on that fact that you have to keep the human body in proportions. For instance, the face is broken up into quadrants (might not have been the term). The forehead area is one, the eyes, nose, and ears are within the second, and the mouth and chin appear within the third.

So I am trying to improve my drawing skills - people drawing, specifically.?

My sister and I made a trip recently to Half-Price Books to see if we could find a good book about that. I had to ask the clerk where the Art section was. Little did we know he is into Art as well. At check-out, he informed us: "Believe it or not, the hardest part of the human body to draw is the hand."

I do often learn useful tidbits of information online. Sites such as E-how or YouTube often have helpful demonstrations of how to paint the sky or the grass or clouds, making it easier to practice without leaving the comfort of your dining room table.

But drawing people. I would take a class for that. It seems immensely complicated.

Flesh tone. Even after watching several videos, mixing? bits of red, brown, blue, white, and yellow to come up with a specific shade of skin...that one, as you can see from my examples, is yet to be mastered.

Shading. Getting the shading right on skin. Again, challenging.

Opinions may vary here. I thought bringing the texture out in her hair was fun. There were so many colors and trying to get the effect of curl rather than straight lines. I don't know how well that comes across. Again, getting the facial shading correct really kicked my ****. :) And I noticed after I took the picture that I smeared her lipstick. Sorry, Mystery Lady. I think my hands were shaking from the frustration of getting it wrong.?

Well, after I take the class, assuming I feel I can show some actual improvement - and I am hopeful about that - I'll post a picture and probably even recommend the class.

Where Art is concerned, I will take the cue from the world's most interesting man : Stay thirsty, my friends. ;-)

U.S. Air Force stops reporting data on Afghanistan drone strikes

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - With debate intensifying in the United States over the use of drone aircraft, the U.S. military said on Sunday that it had removed data about air strikes carried out by unmanned planes in Afghanistan from its monthly air power summaries.

U.S. Central Command, which oversees the Afghanistan war, said in a statement the data had been removed because it was "disproportionately focused" on the use of weapons by the remotely piloted aircraft as it was published only when strikes were carried out - which happened during only 3 percent of sorties. Most missions were for reconnaissance, it said.

The debate over the use of drones in Afghanistan and elsewhere was triggered in part by U.S. President Barack Obama's decision to nominate his chief counter-terrorism adviser John Brennan, an architect of the drone campaign, as the new director of the CIA.

The Air Force Times said air force chiefs had started posting the drone data last October in an attempt to provide more detail on the use of drones in Afghanistan.

The newspaper said the statistics were provided for November through January, but the February summary released on March 7 had a blank spot where the drone data had previously been listed.

"A variety of multi-role platforms provide ground commanders in Afghanistan with close air support capabilities, and it was determined that presenting the weapons release data as a whole better reflects the air power provided" in Afghanistan, Central Command said in its statement.

"Protecting civilians remains at the very core of AFCENT's (Air Force Central Command's) mission," it said. "The use of all AFCENT aerial weapons are tightly restricted, meticulously planned, carefully supervised and coordinated, and applied by only qualified and authorized personnel."

The statement said the decision to stop reporting the drone strikes was taken with the International Security Assistance Force - the NATO-led coalition in Afghanistan.

Brennan was sworn into office on Friday following a protracted confirmation battle that saw Senator Rand Paul attempt to block a vote on the nomination with a technical maneuver called a filibuster, in which he tried to prevent a vote by talking continuously.

Paul held the Senate floor for more than 12 hours while talking mainly about drones, expressing concern that Obama's administration might use the aircraft to target U.S. citizens in the United States.

Kenya's KenolKobil issues full year 2012 profit warning

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenyan fuel marketer KenolKobil issued on Thursday a profit warning for the full year to December, saying they could be hurt by high fuel prices and volatile exchange rates.

KenolKobil added earnings for the first six months ended June were hit by foreign exchange losses as well as lower margins from oil trading and distribution.

KenolKobil said that high oil prices, price controls, volatile exchange rates in the countries they operate in and high financing costs had continued to undermine its net profit.

"As a result, management expects that the company's results for the second six months ending December 31 2012 to be much lower than the results for the same period ending December 31 2011," it said in a statement.

The oil marketer posted a first-half pretax loss of 5.68 billion shillings having made a profit in the same period last year of 3.23 billion shillings.

KenolKobil, which is one of the largest fuel marketing firms in the east African country also operates in eight neighbouring nations including Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania, Rwanda and Zambia.

Last week it said takeover talks with Switzerland-based Puma had collapsed.

At 1016 GMT, its share price was down 1.4 percent to 11 shillings.

Joss Whedon Talks S.H.I.E.L.D. Series, Hulk Movies, and More

joss-whedon-slice

During a recent interview for his take on Shakespeare?s Much Ado About Nothing, Joss Whedon also fielded some questions on comics-related projects. ?At the forefront of that discussion was the upcoming ABC series Marvel?s S.H.I.E.L.D., but?The Avengers?director also addressed his consulting work for Marvel and just how the eventual stand-alone Hulk movie could work. ?Whedon also commented on films in the DC universe, including his work on a Wonder Woman feature and just how far he progressed with it. ?Hit the jump to see what he had to say.?

shield-tv-pilot-set-photo-joss-whedonIn a recent interview with Deadline, Whedon fielded a variety of comics-related questions, starting with his experience on the S.H.I.E.L.D.?TV series:

?That was fun to do, but again, too much work. The idea of the Little Guy is something that I am very fierce about, and there has never been a better Little Guy than Clark Gregg. That intrigued me, this world around the?superhero?community. It?s the people whose shop windows get blown up when the Destroyer shows up. It?s the more intimate stories that belong on television that we can really tap into the visual style and ethos, and even some of the mythology, of the Marvel movies. I think we?ve put together another really great ensemble headed by Clark. And how much it?s actually seeding or hinting or reacting to what?s going on in the movies is something we?ll let play out as we go. For me the most important thing is that people fall in love with it on its own merits, rather than constantly asking, ?Is there gonna be an Avenger?? Well, there?s not gonna be a Hulk because that guy?s too expensive.

?I will be as involved as I can be ? mostly on a story level. On the TV show I can say, ?No, do it my way.? I?m just trying to keep it exciting and meaningful and surprising.?

?

Whedon went on to talk about his work with Kevin Feige and how his consulting for Marvel operates:

?I understand what Kevin [Feige] is going for and where he?s heading, and I read the scripts and watch cuts and talk to the directors and writers and give my opinion. Occasionally there could be some writing. But I?m not trying to get in anybody?s soup, I?m just trying to be helpful. Every time you work on a project it?s a little vacation from the project you?re working on the other 23 hours. That?s the thing ? it replenishes you to do something else. And they?re very aware that if I?m too tired or busy to help with anything, that?s fine. But if I can help and not get in the way of the actual filmmakers, that?s what I?m going to do.

the-avengers-mark-ruffalo-joss-whedon-imageWhedon also addressed the recent?Hulk?rumors and talked about his vision for how a stand-alone movie would work:

?The Hulk is the most difficult Marvel property because it?s always about balance. Is he a monster? Is he a hero? Are you going to root for a protagonist who spends all his time trying to stop the reason you came to the?movie?from happening? It?s always a dance. I don?t think the first two movies nailed it, but I don?t envy them the task. It was easier to have him in a group than to build everything around him. I don?t think there would be any problem getting a movie together that had enough Banner, even if there was also Hulk. But if he was only Hulk for the entire movie I think Mark [Ruffalo] at some point would go, why am I here? I would be less inclined to pursue a storyline where the Hulk is only ever the Hulk. Mark [Ruffalo] and I loved the Hulk and went over and over the concept of rage and how it should manifest, and that part of it was fascinating to both of us. But when it comes time for the Hulk he has to put on the silliest damn pajamas you ever saw, a tiara made of balls, and a bunch of dots on his face and growl around like an idiot. The real heart of the experience ultimately becomes playing Banner. And people fell in love with Banner because I think Mark has you from the first time he shows up.?

Finally, Whedon comments on the DC films and his work on?Wonder Woman:

?I don?t keep that close an eye on it. But I loved Batman Begins so much and thought Christopher Nolan nailed Batman in a way that nobody ever had. It couldn?t be more different from The Avengers, and the Marvel and DC universes are different?animals. If they actually crack the code which has not been done in terms of creating a shared sensibilities where all the movies are interesting and come together, I?m going to be thrilled. I have no fear that we?re going to be stepping on each others? turf.

?It?s not easy. It?s not a simple trick. The Marvel properties with the exception of Batman who has often been described as the Marvel character in the DC universe are much easier to translate to a modern audience. Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern are so far above us and their powers are amorphous and that makes it 10 times harder. Even when you?re doing a fight, it?s harder to write a fight for Thor than it is for Captain America because he?s that much stronger. I loved what I was doing on Wonder Woman. Clearly I was an excited?party?of one. I wrote the movie, I felt good about the characters, the structure needed work, I did another outline, they read it and were done. There wasn?t even a phone call.?

Mamas DIY Design...Ikea and Design Dad to the rescue ...

Of course you?re wondering what Mama has been up to the past couple of weeks, right?! Well, besides changing poopy diapers and tripping over our newly blind Pug-dog (so sad Mama knows), Mama has finally broken ground on the DIY project that we?ve been talking about forever and a day. Here?s how it went down?

Hubs: ?Lily-girl?s school and craft projects are eating up the dining room table? Where am I supposed to eat?

Mama: ?We could do it 1970s-style and bring in TV dinner trays?? (How retro, right?!)

Hubs: *SNIFF* *HUFF* (insert eye roll as well)

Mama: ?Okay, let?s finally redo the guest room and make it into a craft/guest/office/homework room??

Hubs: ?That?s a lot going on in one room, don?t you think??

Mama: ?Don?t worry, Mama has Pinterest and Ikea to consult with us!?

Hubs: (insert suspicious raised eyebrows here)

Doesn?t it all come down to Pinterest these days anyways? Well, it?s all good in theory but when it comes to actually applying the ideas in real life it can be a tad overwhelming. As can Ikea on President?s weekend but we managed to make it through with no extras but the one thing we came for (at least this trip) and the hubs survived putting it all together (always a bonus). While the room is still in project-mode and not fully ready to be shown off here, Mama is so proud that we took the plunge to make our house more functional for our family. The kids love sitting in there doing crafts, homework and Mama has space to put all of those craft supplies and projects that are always popping up. Next up is paint and hanging the Plasma TV that Mama found at Costco.

How is this relevant to you and your home? Well, it just so happens that Celebrity?Designer Dad Stephan Saint-Onge is presenting a FREE Life Improvement Seminar this Sunday, March 10 at 1 p.m. at IKEA San Diego (2149 Fenton Parkway, San Diego) to help you make your home more functional on a budget and with a little creativity. WHAT?! Sign-me-up! FREE design advice people and it?s a real live person instead of just a pinned picture!

Presented by Family Circle and Ikea, you?re sure to get the room advice you?ve always wanted but never wanted to pay a designer for.

Plus, they?re going to have some awesome FREE giveaways for attendees!! So come on down and get your free design advice and be inspired to make your kitchen or any extra space in your house that more functional this year. Believe Mama when she says it?s life-changing y?all!

Don?t believe Mama on how fabulous his advice is? Check out this video:

See you there! XOXO

The iPad may soon have competition in the education sector

Amplify released a video with a product demonstration of its upcoming Android tablet aimed toward education.

Joel Klein, former Chancellor of the NYC Department of Education and now head of News Corporation's Amplify education unit, announced today at the South by Southwest Education conference in Austin, Texas?that the company will release an Android tablet catered to the classroom. "The last thing we need is another pile of used laptops at the back of the classroom," Klein told Fast Company. He added that the new Amplify tablet will be a "fully integrated teaching and learning?solution."

The tablet will come with Google Apps for Education; audio, video, games, and online text books provided by Common Sense Media (according to its official site, the organization is "dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families"); a built-in dictionary from Merriam-Webster; and a graphing calculator. The device will also feature specialized search tools so that students can find digital lessons and homework related to what they learn at school, with all of the content following the guidelines of the Common Core educational standard that has been adopted by most school systems around the country. Additionally, the tablets will feature apps and tools for educators and school officials. Amplify hopes to leave the tablet "open" to allow students to access non-native content and to entice developers to create applications for it. Apple's iPad currently holds the top spot in learning-geared apps, with roughly 20,000 educational apps available in the iTunes App Store.

Little detail has been provided regarding the specifications in Amplify's Android tablets, but they'll cost about $299 for the Wi-Fi only model and require a $99-per-year subscription for access to the education content for two years. Amplify will also offer a $349 4G-capable version of the tablet with a $179-per-year contract.

The New York Times?reports?that the company is hoping school districts use grants from the Education Department's Race to the Top program to help pay for the devices.

The maternal effect: How mother deer protect their future kings

Mar. 5, 2013 ? Do mothers invest more care in their sons if they believe their child is destined to be a king, president or a high-powered leader? The answer is definitively yes -- as long as those mothers and their sons happen to have hooves.

New research from BYU reports that, just like the classic tale of Bambi, females from the deer family are more likely to invest more in the survival and health of their male offspring if there is a good chance those sons will become a "Great Prince of the Forest."

"Our research demonstrates clearly that a mother's investment in her offspring was evident during adulthood, even though offspring live independently of their mothers from a very young age," said Brock McMillan, associate professor of wildlife ecology at BYU.

The comprehensive study of deer and elk from the Intermountain West found that the most dominant males at the time of death were those who were born into the most favorable maternal conditions 5 to 15 years before.

While favorable maternal conditions are largely tied to the health of the expectant mother, there are additional elements at play.

A mother's investment happens both in the womb and during the first few months of life. During those early stages of life, mothers take care to provide more excellent nourishment through lactation as well as better habitats for the baby.

"Male deer and elk live independently of their mothers for several years in highly variable environments," McMillan said. "They live through severe winters with deep snow and little to eat, dry summers with poor quality food and years of injuries and ailments associated with everyday life. Even with many years of exposure to the environment, the maternal effect was still evident."

The study, appearing in the current issue of scientific journal PLOS ONE, provides new information for how deer and elk populations propagate.

Whereas deforestation, human-encroachment into natural habitats, increased predators, and several other factors have been thought to play the most prominent roles in determining deer and elk population trends, this study implies that an equally important factor is the health and nurturing of the mothers years before.

"For those unconcerned about deer or elk, this research can be a reminder that similar research exists for humans," said student Eric Freeman, lead author on the study. "Conditions experienced in utero affect offspring throughout their life even in long-lived species."

With the study, Freeman joined the throngs of BYU students before him who completed peer-review research as undergraduates.

"In many ways, this research was the most important part of my undergraduate education," Freeman said. "I became a much better thinker and writer as a direct result of my work on this research with my advisors."

Freeman is currently a graduate student in the College of Life Sciences studying mule deer fawns. He plans to pursue a PhD with the goal of eventually teaching and conducting research at a university.

Wildlife ecology professor Randy Larsen is also a co-author on the study. McMillan and Larsen are professors in the department of Plant and Wildlife Sciences.

Evernote Passwords Hacked - Business Insider

Kevin Smith/Business Insider

The Evernote app for iPhone.

Evernote, the popular note-taking app on mobile devices and computers, has been hacked, forcing the company to reset all user passwords.

In a blog post, Evernote said the hackers did not take any private user data or payment information. The system-wide password reset is just a precaution.

Here's Evernote's explanation for what happened:

Evernote's Operations & Security team has discovered and blocked suspicious activity on the Evernote network that appears to have been a coordinated attempt to access secure areas of the Evernote Service.

...

In our security investigation, we have found no evidence that any of the content you store in Evernote was accessed, changed or lost. We also have no evidence that any payment information for Evernote Premium or Evernote Business customers was accessed.

The investigation has shown, however, that the individual(s) responsible were able to gain access to Evernote user information, which includes usernames, email addresses associated with Evernote accounts and encrypted passwords. Even though this information was accessed, the passwords stored by Evernote are protected by one-way encryption.

All Evernote users will be prompted to change their password next time they try to log in. The company updated its mobile apps today to make changing your password easier.

The Evernote hacking is the latest in a series of hacks of popular tech companies, web services, and apps. All kinds of companies from Facebook to Apple have experienced some form of hacking in recent weeks.

Barclaycard Rewards MasterCard vs. Chase Freedom Visa - Credit ...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's face it. Sometimes, reading about personal finance can make for some pretty dry reading. Annual fee this, interest rate that, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Are you still awake?

So, in an attempt to spice things up a little bit, I decided to start a series on MPFJ called,?Credit Card Boxing. In each match, two credit cards (of the same general category of credit card) will be compared side by side in an attempt to determine which reigns supreme over the other. When applicable, the winner from the previous match will advance to compete in the next round.

In this, the 2nd match of the series, we're comparing?two general purpose credit cards.

In the left corner, we have weighing in at a hefty 5.23 g (weighed in the scale in my lab), my favorite credit card that I use for almost all of my purchases, the?Chase Freedom Visa Card. If you missed the first MPFJ credit card boxing match last Saturday, this card beat out the new Discover it Card (although it was a close match). ?

In the right corner,?we have weighing in at a respectable 5.07 g, the?Barclaycard Rewards MasterCard. I haven't personally tried out this card yet, so I was curious to learn a little more about it.

Shown below is a screenshot from?CreditCards.com?(the first place I go for looking up information on credit cards) listing all of the pertinent details for the?Chase Freedom Visa Card.

  • Chase Freedom Visa?Pluses
    • There is no annual fee.
    • A very nice $100 bonus for signing up.
    • 5% cash back in rotating categories every quarter. From personal experience, I can tell you that these categories are actually quite useful. They are not highly specific like with some cards. For example, right now, they are doing 5% cash back for gas stations. I think pretty much anyone can relate to the benefits of getting cash back for gas purchases. They have also done grocery stores in the past, although discount stores like WalMart, Sam's, and Costco do not qualify for this.
    • 1% cash back on all other purchases.
  • Chase Freedom Visa?Minuses
    • Requires excellent credit history, which can be a deal breaker for some folks.?
    • 3% transaction fee for all transactions completed in a foreign currency. This can add up quickly if you plan on using this credit card whilst traveling!?

And, shown below is a table listing out all of the pertinent details for the?Barclaycard Rewards MasterCard. You can also click here to view the card's Terms and Conditions as well.?

  • Barclaycard Rewards MasterCard?Pluses
    • No annual fee - always a nice thing!
    • Get a 5000 point / $50 statement credit after your first purchase upon getting the card.?
      • A nice perk, but not quite as good as the $100 you get upon opening a Chase Freedom Card mentioned above.?
    • As stated below, this card uses the sometimes-hard-to-understand points system of rewards. In my opinion, if all cards could just stick to stating their perks in percentages, it sure would reduce a lot of headaches!
      • You earn?2 points?per $1 on gas, grocery, and utility?purchases.
      • On all other purchases, you earn 1 point per $1 spent.
    • What do these cash back rewards mean in plain English? Good question, because I am not sure without doing a little mental math!?
    • Luckily, they tell us in the table below that in this card's rewards scoring, 5000 points = $50 USD.?
      • What this means is that you get 2% cash back for gas, grocery, and utility purchases and 1% cash back for all other purchases.
  • Barclaycard Rewards MasterCard?Minuses
    • 3% transaction fee for all transactions completed in a foreign currency (same as Chase Freedom Card above).
    • Requires excellent credit history, which can be a deal breaker for some folks.?

Although I honestly wouldn't be ashamed of having either of these cards, I would have to say that for my money,?the winner here is the Chase Freedom Visa Card.??

What made me lean towards this one was because by offering 5% cash back in rotating categories throughout the year, the Chase Freedom Visa Card offers higher potential cash savings from my purchases vs. the 1% or 2% cash back program offered by Barclaycard Rewards. This is especially true if you couple the use of the Chase Freedom Visa Card with a gas-specific rewards card like the Chase BP Visa.

How about you all? Do you think the Chase Freedom Visa or?Barclaycard Rewards MasterCard?sounds like a better deal?

Do you personally carry either of these cards?

Vietnam Travel ? Cruising on Son River | ArticlesMagic Plus!

The green river brings to travelers relaxing and amazing experiences as the wooden boats smoothly drift along ambling streams amidst the beautiful limestone mountains.

It is interesting as you wait for the magnificence of Phong Nha-ke Bang National Park slowly appearing as if it is luring tourists into a wonder land. The peace of the still water and the beauty of the surroundings will help tourists to erase daily stresses and tetchiness.

The name ?Son? refers to faithful love, and comes from a folklore love story of a beautiful girl who lived nearby the mountain and played her flute as a call to her lover. However, a cruel tyrant wanted her and detained her in the top floor of his castle when she rejected his proposal. The girl couldn?t bear it and jumped from the window prompting God to release the heavens into the area where she fell. The streams of water started to flow into a river and helped form a mulberry plantation, sugarcane farms and potato and rice fields contributing to make the area peaceful and fruitful.

As they flow down the river, tourists will have a chance to witness riverside activities such as the buffalo drinking water, fishing boats anchoring in, and the noise of fishermen as well as see a few homes tucked on the walls of the mountain.

We were startled as the boat engine was turned off as we heard paddling sounds and started to sense a chill in the dark space as the boat entered the cave.

The Son River is geographically part of the underground river of Phong Nha Cave, stretching 44 kilometers into the neighboring country of Laos. It has been graded as the most valuable cave in the world by the British Cave Research Association (BCRA) for four outstanding features: namely the longest underground river, highest and largest cave mouth, prettiest and broadest sand beaches and most beautiful stalactites. Furthermore, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2003.

Phong Nha Cave was discovered inside the Ke Bang limestone mountain at the end of the 19th century. Champa scripts carved on steles and altars were also found inside the cave whose dry grotto was named Bi Ky in 1992 when 15 BCRA explorers conquered the 7,700 meter Phong Nha Cave in 34 days.

Although only a kilometer of the cave has been exploited for tourism, Phong Nha remains an attraction thanks to its mystery and hidden charm. In the darkish scenery the imagination of tourists can turn stalactites and stalagmites into many kinds of animals, an imperial palace, or even a pillar inlaid with sparkling gemstones.

Returning on the Son River, where the water ebbs and flows around the boat in a fascinating green color, tourists always look back in awe at the triangular mouth of the cave which has garnered the attention of tens of thousands of curious people.

'Right To Farm' To Be Guaranteed By Missouri Amendment ? CBS St ...

Corn plants struggle to survive in a drought-stricken farm field (Photo by Scott Olson/Getty Images)

JEFFERSON CITY (KMOX) - Every small family farmer and big corporate farm will be able to keep on plowing, planting and harvesting as they wish with state constitutional protection.

But some lawmakers said they fear the proposed constitutional right to farm could extend to domestic animal breeders and challenge regulations on puppy mills.

The House gave preliminary approval Wednesday to a measure that would forever guarantee the right to farm and ranch using modern practices and technology.

If approved by voters, the measure would amend the state Constitution to protect farmers and ranchers. Sponsor of the measure Rep. Bill Reiboldt, R-Neosho, said agriculture is very important to the state?s economy.

?This is just to have a broad piece of legislation that protects what you and what I have done traditionally all of our lives in agriculture as well as the more modern practices,? Reiboldt said.

Reiboldt said the main goal of the proposal is to stop outside groups from interfering and trying to restrict agricultural practices.

?There are groups, out of state groups, which are trying to come into Missouri and take these rights from us,? Reiboldt said.

Democratic lawmakers from the Boone County area supported an amendment to exclude pets and exotic animals from the protections for livestock and ranching. Rep. John Wright, D-Boone County, sponsored the amendment.

?These days, there are all kinds of animals that are raised,? Wright said. ?If you look hard enough, you can find lions for sale? Some of these alternative categories of raising animals may call for some degree of oversight.?

Rep. Chris Kelly, D-Columbia, spoke in favor of the amendment that would have excluded breeders of pets from the definition of farmers and ranchers. He said that without the amendment, the issue of puppy mills would again trouble lawmakers.

?This amendment is the only thing between us and a return to puppy land,? Kelly said. ?If dogs are included in this the way they are today, get ready for another barrage of puppy land.?

Kelly referred to the intense debate over regulation of puppy mills in 2011 after voters approved Proposition B, which restricted dog breeding in the state.

Wright?s amendment failed to pass.

Reiboldt said he did not agree the proposed constitutional amendment would cause problems.

?I do not see that coming back at all,? Reiboldt said. ?We?ve got good relationships with breeders.?

Reiboldt said the proposal would not affect any local laws or regulations on agriculture since it applies only to state laws.

The bill passed by a voice vote. The joint resolution will go to the Senate if given final approval by the House. If passed by both chambers, it would appear on the ballot for voters to consider.

Scientist at Work Blog: A Tide of Local Influences

Jim Thomson is principal oceanographer at the Applied Physics Lab at the University of Washington. He studies ocean surface waves and coastal processes and wrote about his expedition to the North Pacific in the fall. This is his last post from Chile.

Monday, Feb. 18

We?ve been loading up our gear and shuffling customs paperwork. In the evenings, I?ve been looking through the new data. They show some remarkable stuff. The turbulence we have recorded at the Canal de Chacao in Chile is similar to what we?ve seen at other sites, but stronger.

The similarities are in the structure and size of the motions. The energy in the turbulence starts at large scales and goes to small scales. The idea was famously described by Lewis Fry Richardson, who said that ?big whirls have little whirls, that feed on their velocity??.

Kolmogorov derived a mathematical form in 1941, and evidence, in the form of measurements, has been accumulating ever since. The turbulence in Chacao has these properties, but with enhancement from the shape of the channel. It is a combination of a process that is both general and local. The data we have generated will be used to decide whether the tidal currents are suitable for electricity-generating turbines.

In addition to the turbulence, our other measurement on the mooring was the ambient noise. These data look familiar as well and will become part of Chris Bassett?s Ph.D. dissertation on underwater sound. In looking, or listening, through the data, he hears the same things we hear in Admiralty Inlet in Washington: ships, sonars, waves breaking on the beach and the turbulence itself.

Chris says it is like listening to Chilean Spanish: on the surface, it is familiar Spanish. As you learn it, the differences reveal a rich language all its own. The fundamentals are the same, but the local influence is strong.

While we waited for customs paperwork, we took a day off and climbed the nearby volcano, Calbuco, which is similar in many ways to the volcanoes we climb at home in the Pacific Northwest. But it is different, too. We started in cow pastures, not a parking lot, and we saw no one else the whole day. We climbed through a temperate rain forest, up a scree slope, and onto snowfields. In the steady rhythm of placing my feet, I felt that I could have been anywhere, until I looked more closely.

This is the essence of learning and of exploration. We begin with something familiar, and we stretch ourselves to something new.

The climb up Calbuco was long and difficult; it took 11 hours, round trip. It was worth it. When we reached the edge of the crater at the top, the clouds cleared for moment. In the far distance, waiting patiently, we saw the ocean.
