Tonight, Chicago-based clarinetist/composer James Falzone and his Allos Musica Trio, featuring Ronnie Malley (oud and voice) and Tim Mulvenna (hand drums and percussion), kick-off their October tour in the Midwest and Southeast U.S.
These dates, which span five states over the course of six consecutive nights, will feature music from the band?s 2010 release, Lamentations (Allos Documents), as well as traditional Arabic songs and brand new pieces composed specifically for this tour.
?The album,? explains the Chicago Reader?s Peter Margasak, ?includes several beautiful original pieces by Falzone?he calls many of them ?lamentations on time,? and they meditate on its relentlessness, its mercuriality, or the restless human desire to speed it up. Though the Arabic influence is unmistakable, the music?s emotional clarity and lyrical grace is universal.?
Here?s the trio performing ?The Fourth Lament: Arja?l Ya Alf Laila? from Lamentations this past April at Strobe Recording?s Strobe Sessions series in Chicago.

About James Falzone:
The versatile Falzone (pronounced fal-zo-nay) is an acclaimed member of Chicago?s jazz and creative improvised music scene, a veteran contemporary music lecturer and clinician, the longtime Director of Music for Grace Chicago Church and an award-winning composer who has been commissioned by chamber groups and symphony orchestras among other institutions.
?Falzone blends an impressive array of influences into a singular style all his own,? writes Cadence reviewer Troy Collins. A nominee for Clarinetist of the Year at the 2011 Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards, he is also known as ?a virtuoso and a brilliant strategist? (Michael Jackson, DownBeat), ?an articulate and interesting composer? (Jerry D?Souza, AllAboutJazz.com) and ?a tremendously likable, alert, no-nonsense improvising clarinetist? (Ben Ratliff, New York Times).
His latest release, Other Doors (Allos Documents), is a tribute to fellow Chicago-born clarinetist Benny Goodman featuring his longstanding quartet, KLANG. Critics have described it as ?immensely impressive? (Brian Morton, Point Of Departure), ?distinct, challenging and pleasurable? (Mark Holston, Jazziz) and ?a band paying homage to the past by playing like the present? (Patrick Jarenwattananon, NPR).
