Focus on fish, fruits and vegetables

Portabella mushrooms are an excellent meat substitute that can be marinated and grilled and packed with vitamins and nutrients.

Grilled vegetable sandwiches on whole wheat bread or buns are easy to prepare and easy on the pocketbook.

Consider grilling fruits and vegetables, combined with fish, instead of red meats.

Fish is easy to prepare, takes less time than red meat or poultry and contains less fat.

Salmon and tuna steaks are loaded with omega 3 fatty acids and can be prepared in a variety of marinades before putting on the grill.

Can?t ditch the red meat?

For red meat lovers, Scroggs suggests keeping consumption to a minimum of 3 six ounce servings per week can help with colorectal cancer prevention. She explains, ?One serving is the size of two decks of cards.?

Trim fat and choose lean meat to avoid PAH?s - polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ? that drip, create smoke, then coat food and promote cancer.

Avoid burning and charring

Grilled, burned and charred meats, including fish, form heterocyclic amines (HCAs) that also damage genes and can lead to cancer of the stomach and colon.

Scroggs warns it?s important to lightly coat the grill with oil to keep charred material from sticking to foods.

Limit grilling time by cooking in the microwave first then finishing on the barbecue.

Use briquettes like hickory and maple on the barbecue to limit high heat that forms HCA?s. Cook at lower temperatures. When using charcoal, spread the coals thin and raise the grill rack with bricks.

Marinade before grilling for an anti-cancer BBQ

Scroggs says marinating meat herbs, vinegar and lemon juice before grilling for just 30 minutes reduces cancer causing HCA?s as much as 96 percent.

?For some grilling enthusiasts, these changes might initially be a lot to stomach,? Scroggs says. ?But updating how you barbecue may mean you continue to enjoy grilling for many summers to come.?

Grilling on the barbecue doesn?t have to be a cancer promoting family affair.

Should that influence my decision??

While business name registration is needed to operate and is obtained from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), trademark registrations are required in order to obtain ownership and protection for brands and logos.

These are obtained from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), both agencies clarified over IPOPHL?s radio show, Piracy Watch.

Atty. Victorio Dimagiba, Director for Trade Regulation and Consumer Protection of the DTI, urged business owners to apply for trademarks.

?Business name registration permits proprietors to operate and engage in commerce, while trademark registration certifies that a business owns the brand or logos they use in products and signages,? he said.

?IPOPHL issues trademark registration to prove ownership over a particular brand,? added Atty. Sara Suguitan, deputy spokesperson for IPOPHL. ?Trademark certificates operate like land titles, but this time, for intellectual property as opposed to real property.?

Under the law, business owners should file an application with the IPOPHL for trademark registration.

?Trademark registration is not mandatory under the law, unlike business name registration,? explained Suguitan. ?However, when copying occurs, your only basis for legal protection is a trademark registration.?

Registration for trademarks is also made urgent by the fact that the law implements a first-to-file system. ?Trademark registration is granted on a first come, first served basis,? she said.

IPOPHL is an agency attached to the Department of Trade and Industry. It issues registration over copyrights, trademarks and patents for protection.

As The Hollywood Reporter first reported, Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger will be replacing Cheryl Cole on the judging panel of The X Factor, Fox, Fremantle and Syco TV announced Monday.

The statement did not explain the reason for the move or how producers would handle the sessions already shot with Cole on the judge's panel.

A source tells THR that Cole will not be on the panel because she lacked chemistry with the other judges, particularly Paula Abdul. "There was no spark," a source says. "It was nobody's fault. It just didn't work."

The source believes that it was Simon Cowell who concluded that replacing Cole was necessary.

The high-level industry source told THR that Fremantle will still pay Cole the reported $1.5 million she was owed under her contract.

Cole was originally announced on the show?s judging panel (Scherzinger was named co-host).

Judges on the show include Cowell, Abdul and L.A. Reid.

Steve Jones will now act as sole host.

The show is expected to debut on Fox this fall.

Her replacement on the CBS Evening News, Scott Pelley, starts tonight, but today, she announced that she's starting a syndicated daytime talk show to be produced by ABC, beginning in the fall of 2012.

There's an interesting perspective change in moving from news to talk: Couric was frequently derided as a lightweight, compared to other evening news anchors, but she has a lot of gravitas, compared to some other talk-show hosts. She became a star, after all, as a host of the Today show, which combines hard news and soft features, and she's always done both. So when she sits at an anchor desk, she does so as someone who once hosted Harry Potter: Behind The Magic. But when she sits on a talk-show set, she does so as someone who has interviewed presidents ? and, perhaps most famously, Sarah Palin.

Contrary to the narrative that would dismiss her as "perky" and her newscast as one that failed because she did personality-driven morning-show-ish pieces instead of hard news, some actual tracking data suggests her show did more hard news than its competitors. Her oft-mentioned sunny personality aside, she's spent the last five years doing a news broadcast, and that's the recent history she takes to daytime.

What could Katie Couric potentially bring to a talk show? Well, for one thing, a reputation as a good interviewer, neither a pushover nor a humorless scold, who has that actual news background. Obviously, this is also true of Barbara Walters, but on The View, Walters competes for time with comedians and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Meanwhile, CBS's The Talk is driven by actresses who set out to make a show for and about moms, not a show that springs from the news, particularly.

There's still Ellen DeGeneres ? who, again, comes from a comedy background ? and there are the self-help shows like Dr. Phil's and The Doctors and so forth. But obviously, an Oprah-shaped hole in the daytime universe has opened, and for those who liked Oprah's show better before it became quite as metaphysical as it ultimately did, the mix of news experience and TV likability might well hit the spot.

It's possible that Couric's show will feature mostly celebrities and cooking segments and everything else daytime viewers are most accustomed to. The number of people who have had unsuccessful daytime talk shows is staggering. It's something everyone thinks they can do that very few people wind up being good at. There's a whole year to wait before the show kicks off, and it's a big gamble to wait that long. But what remains to be seen is whether Couric can leverage her news background in the daytime universe, in a way it turned out to be hard to leverage her daytime background on a newscast.
