Holistic Rehabilitation - The road to addiction recovery for body ...

Albeit holistic rehabilitation is a very good option for addiction recovery for both alcohol and drugs, it will only become effective when the person acknowledges his problem with addiction and is willing to undergo professional treatment. Otherwise, any efforts from family members or friends to rehabilitate the person will only end up as a futile quest. Hence, the road to holistic recovery is for the person to accept treatment at his own will and not through force coercion. Once the alcohol and drugs are taken away, the holistic type of rehab will ensure the person understands how to positively deal with the outbreak of emotional upheaval during the treatment as well as induce alternative therapies such as acupuncture, tai-chi, yoga, and light-sound neurotherapy to work on regaining equilibrium for body, mind and spirit.
With the holistic rehabilitation approach, the use of a variety of therapies will fully cover all the required treatments of the body, emotions, thoughts and spirit. Addiction recovery from alcohol and drugs are not only just a physical problem that is resolved with body detoxification, but more like an emotional and spiritual injury that usually leaves a long-lasting scar. Hence, the various holistic treatments can still be utilized to sustain the patients long after they leave the rehabilitation center, to fully heal their emotional scars and let them move on with their lives with a clean slate.

Teen addiction is also best treated with Holistic approach as it focuses on changing the thought processes in the person?s head. With the use of various mental stimuli in holistic rehabilitation, such as yoga and meditation, it will help clear the hubbub in the person?s head and calm his thoughts, whilst at the same time relieving him from anxieties, stress and pressures. Once the person achieves a healthy body and mind, the spirit is also restored to complete the transformation of the ?whole being?, which is the main concept of holistic healing ? the achievement of the ultimate balance or symmetry of body, mind and spirit.

If you, or a loved one, are in need of treatment for any types of addiction, one of the best facilities that you can count on is The Beachcomber in Delray Beach, Florida is a holistic rehabilitation center that specializes on addiction recovery using various therapies to restore complete balance of the body, mind and spirit. The Beachcomber programs will lead to new awakenings which include step-by-step and stage-by-stage restoration of values and appreciation for living, which is the whole essence of holistic healing. Call or visit us today and take that first step to the road of recovery.

Holistic Approach To Business Will Improve Customer Service

HTML Ready Article. Click on the "Copy" button to copy into your clipboard.

By: Martin Hofschroer

With rapid advancements in technology, modern day consumers are increasingly demanding so it is more essential than ever to learn how to improve customer service.

The current economic climate has resulted in a growing number of consumers shopping around to find the best deal possible and their interactions with businesses often inform their ultimate purchasing decisions.

Even experiencing the smallest level of dissatisfaction can influence a consumer to start shopping elsewhere so organisations must ensure that they provide the highest quality customer service.

If organisations are dedicated to improving customer experience they should abandon consumer retention centres as establishing this departmental approach to their customers is a sure sign that there are immediate issues with their service provision.

Attempting to retain customers through a dedicated department can actually damage relationships as this departmentalised approach is likely to lead to disconnection from other areas in an organisation.

Concentrating on separate departments instead of viewing an organisation as a whole can result in a lack of integration making it difficult for employees to understand what customers experience when dealing with their business.

It is also advisable to steer away from retention centres because these departments typically measure success through call resolution rates or duration metrics which are not valuable for improving customer service.

Viewing an organisation as a whole is essential as business leaders will be able to see where value is created when customers interact with their company, which will inform them how to improve their processes.

Performance improvement consulting professionals can help business managers view their organisation from their customer's perspective through the application of systems thinking theory.

Once a better knowledge of customer experience is achieved, organisations can learn which of their business processes are failing their consumers by being either inefficient or ineffective.

Using a systems thinking approach will enable businesses to design better informed processes which will improve customer experience and also measure the profitability of their consumers, products and services.

Performance improvement consulting professionals will employ trained experts who understand the practical application of systems thinking and how this approach can benefit almost any area of business and industry.

Focusing on a whole organisation as a system with systems thinking is not just used to improve customer service as it can also enhance productivity and reduce mistakes at the same time as eliminating waste.

Performance improvement consulting experts can offer their clients a variety of programmes that explain the benefits of systems thinking.

Latest developments in debt ceiling standoff (AP)

Congress has until Aug. 2 to raise the federal borrowing limit or the government will run out of money and possibly default on its debt. House Republicans say they won't raise the debt limit without equal spending cuts. President Barack Obama and Democrats have insisted that higher revenues must be included.

Tuesday's developments: Obama threatened to veto emergency House legislation that aims to avert a threatened national default, would raise the debt limit by $1 trillion while making cuts to federal spending of $1.2 trillion. The proposal would require another debt limit increase before the 2012 elections, which the White House objects to. Senate Democrats said it would never pass the Senate and conservative House members said it was too small.

Markets react: A White House threat to veto legislation that would avert a debt default pushed stocks lower. The Dow Jones industrial average fell more than 91 points. The Dow was already down 40 points in afternoon trading and lost another 50 after the White House threatened to veto the House legislation.

What's next: House Republican leaders were planning a vote, perhaps as early as Wednesday. In the Senate, Democratic leaders were debating Majority Leader Harry Reid's plan with no date certain for a vote.

___

Some background:

Q: What is the debt ceiling?

A: It's a legal limit on how much debt the government can accumulate. The government takes on debt two ways: It borrows money from investors by issuing Treasury bonds, and it borrows from itself, mostly from the Social Security trust fund, which comes from payroll taxes. Congress created the debt limit in 1917. It's unique to the United States. Most countries let their debts rise automatically when government spending outpaces tax revenue. Congress has increased the debt limit 10 times since 2001.

Q: What is the federal deficit, and how does it differ from the debt?

A: The deficit is how much government spending exceeds tax revenue during a year. Last year, the deficit was $1.29 trillion. The debt is the sum of deficits past and present. Right now, the national debt totals $14.3 trillion ? a ceiling set in 2010.

Q: Why is the prospect of not raising the debt ceiling so worrisome?

A: The government now borrows more than 40 cents of each dollar it spends. If the debt ceiling does not rise, the government would need to choose what to pay and what not, including benefits like Social Security, wages for the military or other bills. It also might delay interest payments on Treasury bonds. Any default could lead to financial panic weakening the country's credit rating, the dollar and the already hobbled economy. Interest rates would likely rise, increasing the cost of borrowing for the government and ordinary Americans.

Q: Who holds the $14.3 trillion in outstanding U.S. debt?

A: The U.S. government owes itself $4.6 trillion, mostly borrowed from Social Security revenues. The remaining $9.7 trillion is owed to investors in Treasury securities ? banks, pension funds, individual investors, state and local governments and foreign investors and governments. Nearly half of that ? $4.5 trillion ? is held by foreigners including China with $1.15 trillion and Japan with $907 billion.

Q: How did the debt grow from $5.8 trillion in 2001 to its current $14.3 trillion?

A: The biggest contributors to the nearly $9 trillion increase over a decade were:

_2001 and 2003 tax cuts under President George W. Bush: $1.6 trillion.

_Additional interest costs: $1.4 trillion.

_Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan: $1.3 trillion.

_Economic stimulus package under Obama: $800 billion.

_2010 tax cuts, a compromise by Obama and Republicans that extended jobless benefits and cut payroll taxes: $400 billion.

_2003 creation of Medicare's prescription drug benefit: $300 billion.

_2008 financial industry bailout: $200 billion.

_Hundreds of billions less in revenue than expected since the Great Recession began in December 2007.

? Other spending increases in domestic, farm and defense programs, adding lesser amounts.

Many people think that people with this condition must be sleeping soundly, but this is often not the case. Studies have revealed that people who snore are actually not getting a good night?s sleep at all. There are some things that you can try that might help alleviate the problem so that you can start getting a better night of sleep.

Most people snore because something is obstructing the airflow in their mouth. Certain medications, exhaustion, and alcohol consumption can also cause people to snore, as well.

Medical experts consider snoring in small children as an abnormal condition. This is why it is highly recommended to take children who snore for medical examination so as to discover the cause. The child may be snoring because of severe conditions such as sinusitis or adenoid enlargement. Antibiotics are usually used to treat sinusitis while adenoid enlargement may require a surgical procedure.

Regular exercise is another good way to improve this condition. You can start will mild exercise and increase the intensity so that you can have better sleep at night. Watch your diet and stay away from alcohol and cigarettes. You may also consider using a mouthpiece that is usually fitted by a dentist. It is important to consult a medical professional for the best type of treatment.

Most people can find instant relief by wearing a chin strap to bed at night. This simple device goes on like a headband and it keeps your jaw closed so that your mouth doesn?t drop open while you are sleeping. Some people have found great success with this product, while others don?t like the idea of having to wear something to bed every night.

Obama to warn of 'incalculable damage' if no debt deal (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? US President Barack Obama stepped up the pressure on Republicans over the US debt crisis, scheduling a rare primetime speech to warn of "incalculable damage" if a compromise is not reached.

Obama's warning Monday, previewed by a White House official, came as Republican and Democratic leaders of Congress remained deadlocked over a plan to raise the US debt ceiling and deal with the country's ballooning deficits.

The prospect of the world's richest country running out of cash to pay its bills come August 2 sent stocks sliding and gold soaring while the IMF warned of a "severe shock" to the world economy absent an elusive breakthrough.

"President Obama, like Democratic and Republican presidents before him, will make clear that failure to compromise and raise the debt ceiling would, in the words of former president Reagan, do 'incalculable damage'," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"With eight days until deadline, compromise is the only reasonable path ahead to keep our economy strong and growing," the official said.

Obama's 9:00 pm (0100 GMT) speech from the White House's ornate East Room would be only his seventh formal address to the nation, and the first since he unveiled a timeline for a US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in June.

The address came with Democrats who control the Senate and Republicans who lead the House of Representatives at odds over rival plans for raising the $14.3 trillion US debt limit, allowing cash-strapped Washington to stay open.

Washington hit its debt ceiling on May 16 but has used spending and accounting adjustments, as well as higher-than-expected tax receipts, to continue operating normally but can only do so through August 2.

At that point, US leaders will face an agonizing choice about cutting an estimated 40 cents of every dollar in spending and defaulting either on debt payments or on other obligations like government health or retirement benefits.

Finance and business leaders have warned that failure to raise the US debt ceiling by then would send shockwaves through the fragile world economy, while Obama has predicted a default would trigger economic "Armageddon."

All sides in the dispute agree Washington must reduce its deficit but disagree on the size and blend of spending cuts and revenue increases as well as on how and whether to slice into the social safety net.

"We need to make the right decision now, and we need to do it because the economy is on the line," Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid warned with the polarized US Congress seemingly no nearer to a breakthrough.

Reid and Republican House Speaker John Boehner have presented rival strategies to raise the US debt limit, deflate the swollen US budget deficit, and ensure Washington can continue to pay its bills.

The plans differed in one critical, politically divisive aspect: Reid's would meet Obama's goal of raising the debt ceiling enough to avoid another politically painful standoff before his November 2012 re-election bid.

Boehner -- who has flatly rejected Obama's call for tax hikes on the rich and on wealthy corporations -- envisioned a two-step process with increases first to February or March 2012, and later to 2013.

"Time is running short and it would be irresponsible for the president to veto this common-sense plan and run the risk of default. I would encourage the Senate to pass this plan and the president to sign it," said Boehner.

Obama was expected to use his address to prop up Reid's plan, which Republicans have vowed to kill when both strategies face midweek votes. Boehner was to speak after Obama.

Weighed down by the impasse, US stock markets fell and safe-haven Swiss francs soared amid worries about both the dollar and the euro, while gold climbed to a record $1,624 an ounce before falling back slightly to $1,614.

The dollar lost 1.6 percent to the Swiss franc while US Treasury prices fell -- though not enough to signal panic in the bond markets. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 3.00 percent from 2.96 percent late on Friday.

"The odds that the United States will face a ratings downgrade, even if the debt ceiling is raised, have clearly risen," said Nigel Gault of IHS Global Insight, referring to Washington's sterling Triple-A debt rating.

The market worries came as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton promised during a trip to Asia that "intense" wrangling among the White House, its Democratic allies, and Republican foes would reach an 11th-hour compromise.

"I am confident that Congress will do the right thing and secure a deal on the debt ceiling and work with President Obama to take steps to improve our long-term fiscal outlook," Clinton said in Hong Kong.

The International Monetary Fund pressed US politicians to raise the debt ceiling "expeditiously to avoid a severe shock to the US economy and world financial markets" with the deadline now looming large.

The IMF warned that US debt would total 99 percent of the size of the US economy this year and 103.0 percent in 2012, and urged a blend of spending cuts, tax revenue increases, and reductions in cherished social safety net programs.

Kimberly-Clark 2Q profit falls on higher costs (AP)

DALLAS ? Consumer products maker Kimberly-Clark Corp. said Monday that its second-quarter profit fell 18 percent, dragged down by higher commodity costs and an increased tax rate.

The Dallas company also said it expects 2011 adjusted earnings will likely be in the lower half of its previous range, but raised its full-year revenue guidance.

Its shares fell 65 cents to $67.25 in premarket trading.

Like many companies, Kimberly-Clark has seen costs for the materials it uses continue to climb and has raised prices in an attempt to alleviate some of the pressure.

Chairman and CEO Thomas Falk said in a statement that the commodity cost environment has gotten worse over the past three months, but that the company was keeping its full-year outlook because it planned to lower overhead costs and should benefit from favorable currency exchange rates.

But Falk said if input costs don't moderate, it's likely Kimberly-Clark's 2011 adjusted earnings will be in the lower half of its range.

The maker of Kleenex tissues, Huggies diapers and other goods reported net income of $408 million, or $1.03 per share, for the period ended June 30. That's down from $498 million, or $1.20 per share, a year ago.

Adjusted earnings were $1.18 per share. This surpassed the $1.14 per share that analysts surveyed by FactSet predicted.

Revenue rose 8 percent to $5.26 billion from $4.86 billion on higher sales volumes and increased prices. Wall Street expected $5.11 billion.

The company's personal care unit reported a 7 percent increase in sales, but sales in North America declined 2 percent as demand for infant care and child care products remained weak and fewer infant care shipments were made to Canada. Sales increased 9 percent in Europe as better sales of baby wipes, child care products and other items offset lower diaper volumes. Kimberly-Clark's international operations ? which includes Asia, Latin American, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa ? posted a 19 percent rise in sales.

At the consumer tissue division, revenue rose 9 percent to $1.7 billion. North American revenue rose 5 percent, while European revenue increased 11 percent. K-C international's revenue rose 14 percent.

The health care segment's revenue rose 14 percent in the quarter, with medical supply volumes increasing by double-digits thanks in part to better sales of gloves and clothing.

The company's tax rate climbed to 31 percent from 27.5 percent.

Kimberly-Clark maintained full-year guidance for adjusted earnings between $4.80 to $5.05 per share. Revenue is now expected to climb about 5 percent to 7 percent. The company's prior forecast called for revenue to rise 4 percent to 6 percent.

Analysts expect 2011 earnings $4.85 per share on revenue of $20.73 billion.

Kimberly-Clark's outlook accounts for anticipated higher costs for polymer resin, superabsorbent, adhesives and other packaging materials. The company said that costs for many of those materials have continued to climb even though oil prices have moderated somewhat over the past three months.

Now out of 'office,' Carell turns focus to movies (AP)

NEW YORK ? Steve Carell is not going through Michael Scott withdrawal ? at least not yet.

"I don't sit at home and think of `that's what she said' jokes and wish that I could do them one more time," says the actor, laughing. "But it's only been a few months, too, so I haven't really had any time. All of that is still fresh to me."

Carell's sendoff from "The Office" (for which he received a parting Emmy nomination) is still fresh in many viewers' minds, too. The emotional hubbub over his exit after seven seasons caught Carell by surprise. He was flattered, he says, but, with typical humility, considers it "just an actor leaving a show."

He moved on to spend more time with his family (wife and former "Saturday Night Life" cast member Nancy Ellen Walls and their two children) and to expand the movie career he had previously squeezed into summer breaks from shooting the hit NBC comedy.

The first glimpse of Carell's post-"Office" days is "Crazy Stupid Love," an ensemble romantic comedy in which he stars and that he produced.

"It is sort of a new phase," Carell said in a recent interview at the Ritz-Carlton. "We'll see how it goes. It's just, just started. You're witnessing day one of the new phase. So far so good."

"Crazy Stupid Love" mirrors the type of movie Carell wants to pursue, particularly its blend of comedy and drama, and its focus on character-based realism.

Carell plays a suburban father who, when his wife (Julianne Moore) cheats on him and they separate, remakes himself as a lady's man with the help of a suave pick-up artist (Ryan Gosling). The film also examines love stories in different generations (Emma Stone pairs with Gosling).

Glenn Ficarra, who directed with John Requa, calls the role a "transitional piece" for Carell that shows he can smoothly range into more serious material.

"Steve's a writer, so he's always thinking about scenes in a slightly different way, not just as an actor," says Ficarra. "Like `40-Year-Old Virgin' is a very kind of crass concept, but it's a very heartfelt movie. Steve always approaches everything he does trying to come from a real place, as opposed to a wacky place. So I think it's a natural extension to move toward dramatic stuff, because you're just dealing with reality."

After memorably funny roles in "Bruce Almighty" and "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," 2005's "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" (which Carell co-wrote with Judd Apatow) catapulted Carell's movie career. The former Second City stand-out and "Daily Show" correspondent responded with a steady string of movies.

He has vacillated among blockbusters ("Get Smart," "Despicable Me"), box-office flops ("Evan Almighty") and absurdist comedies ("Dinner for Schmucks"). But he's shown a respectable inclination for adult-minded comedies such as "Dan in Real Life," "Date Night" and "Little Miss Sunshine."

But in the constant back-and-forth between movies and the mockumentary-style "Office," some TV habits were hard to break.

"The one thing that's hard getting away from is looking into the camera," says Carell, laughing. "This happened all the way through `The Office,' when I would go off and do a movie. For the first week, I would continually look into the lens of the movie camera. I'd stop myself and go, `What the hell am I doing? This isn't the documentary.'"

Directors have often praised Carell's ability to improvise on the spot, performing repeated alternative takes in comedies to twist a scene in different directions. An admirer of great actors such as Alan Arkin, Jack Lemmon and Peter Sellers, Carell has always favored character-based comedy and detests "jokey jokes."

"In real life, people don't walk around telling jokes to each other," Carell says. "That, to me, is not what's most funny about real life. Real human situations and responses are what really make me laugh. When you hear a joke ? and it depends on the context and the movie ? you feel like you're being set up that way and manipulated. I never like that in a movie. I would much rather buy into a character and laugh at what they're doing as opposed to how funny they're trying to be."

Julianne Moore, who has won Oscar nominations for roles in such dramas as "Far From Heaven," "The Hours" and "Boogie Nights," believes Carell's approach works, regardless of genre.

"Steve has got a kinetic acuity like nothing I've ever seen," she says. "It is effortless ? or seemingly effortless. ... He's great at connecting and noticing things that are going on around him."

"Crazy Stupid Love" is the first film produced by Carell's production company, Carousel Productions. As a producer, he picked the directors, contributed to casting and had input on keeping the tone of the movie as realistic as possible ? using "treacle cutters," he says, to weed out sentimentality. In one low-point scene for his character, his wife leaves and it begins to rain. Carell improvised a self-conscious line: "Ah, what a clich?."

Carell is producing a documentary on the last six decades of comedy, to be hosted by David Steinberg. Upcoming acting jobs include co-starring with Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones in "Great Hope Springs," another tale of marriage woes. He will also play a magician in "Burt Wonderstone," and he recently shot the independent romantic comedy "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" with Keira Knightley.

Carell, who hasn't been credited as a writer since a few 2006-2007 "Office" episodes, plans to write more now that he has time. He knows wistful emotions might kick in when, in a few weeks, "The Office" returns to production for its fall season without him, but thus far, he's relishing his new period ? particularly his time with his kids.

"It's been great," he says with a smile. "It's been exactly what I hoped it would be."

How I Cut My Energy Bill By a Third with Tech and Common Sense [How To]

How I Cut My Energy Bill By a Third with Tech and Common SenseLast month my electric bill was $300. That was ridiculous. Something had to be done. By using gadgets, common sense, and a constant awareness of power consumption, I've made changes that will cut my power bill by at least a third. And that's not just temporarily?that's forever. And, I'm doing it without really sacrificing anything.

I've always used more power than normal people because 1) I work at home on a 30-inch monitor and a 27-inch iMac, and 2) I have an assload of electronics. The 63-inch Plasma TV (larger TVs use more already, and plasma draws three times as much power as LCD), as well as water coolers, various NASes, and the need to keep some lights on during the day for my rabbits are a constant drain on the grid. But what could I do? Could I still realistically use all my devices when I wanted them, but still draw a lot less power? Yes. Here's how you can do it too.

I'm going to start with common sense tips that require no extra equipment so anyone can start lowering their power consumption right now. But if you're serious about lowering your electricity usage dramatically, I'll discuss tools like the eMonitor that tell you exactly what's drawing power in your home down to the circuit level. Once you know exactly what's wasting money, I'll point out some advanced tips and equipment you can use to do something about it.

The common sense stuff you can do right now

Turn off your lights

Go around your house and turn off all the lights you're not using, especially if you're using old style incandescent light bulbs (Edison's kind). Bathrooms, closets, and sometimes kitchens use incandescent lights because unlike compact fluorescents, they get up to maximum brightness right away. When all you want to do is take a leak or check the mirror, CFLs won't even be done going through their 5 minute warmup stage up by the time you're washing your hands. Another alternative is LED bulbs, which are dramatically more expensive upfront, but don't have the drawbacks of CFL and behave more like a traditional light.

Point is, each 60 watt bulb uses 0.060 kWh (more or less, depending on your wiring) per hour, and you probably have somewhere between 2 to 4 bulbs in each bathroom and kitchen, which makes for 120-240 watts of wasted electricity per hour. In comparison, my 27-inch iMac takes about 130 watts with the screen on and everything powered up. Two (inefficient) lights use the same amount of power as a large computer! A laptop uses about 40 to 60 watts, in comparison, so you could do an hour's work by just shutting off a light.

Moral: Turn off your lights when you're not using them. Tell your spouse, roommates, parents, pets and goblins to do the same, and show them exactly how much power they're wasting by not doing this.

Unplug stuff you rarely use

I have an exercise room with a treadmill and a TV inside. I don't use them nearly as often as I should, which means they could theoretically sit plugged in for weeks for no reason. Stuff like TVs and other stereo equipment still draw power when they're plugged in but off?which is called vampire drain?due to the fact that they have to still power their IR receivers for your remote control to work. You'll need to physically unplug these things from the wall to eliminate any power consumption when not in use. It might take an extra minute to find the cord, plug it in and switch on the electronics when I do use them?and an extra minute to unplug when I'm done?but it's worth it if they're barely used.

Don't use your AC so damn much

Your air conditioning power usage is a very nebulous thing, because unless you physically track how long your AC was on (including all the stops and starts), compare it to how much electricity your other electronics are using, then somehow correlate that with your bill at the end of the month, you're really in the dark. But trust me when I say that it's a lot. Depending on the weather, how much you use it and what other electronics you have, you could be paying more for AC than everything else in your house put together. That's insane.

We've got five alternatives to running your air conditioner all the time, which include ice in front of a fan, turning off your heat-generating electronics, and generating a breeze into your home at night when the air outside is cooler. I'm not telling you to not use the AC at all, but walking around the house with fewer clothes on rarely hurts anybody.

For the curious, I'll cover an actual way to measure your air conditioner's power usage compared to everything else a little later, with the eMonitor.

Turn off your electronics, especially your computers, when you're not using them

This point, just like turning off your lights, is a super obvious thing that all of us know, but don't religiously follow, because we're not electricity nazis. Unless you're torrenting at night, or hosting a Minecraft server for your friends, you don't really need to have your computer on when you're asleep. I know it's nice to not have to wait 5 minutes to get started in the day, but are those five minutes really worth keeping your computer on overnight and spending $1.85 a month? Actually, probably.

But, when you're trying to shave off dollars from your bill, having a computer, a NAS, a couple laptops, and stereo equipment be on all the time can quickly add up to double digits per month for stuff you're not using. I'm not talking about not using these devices when you need them, it's the paying for stuff when it's not actually having any benefit that's the killer.

Find out exactly what's using so much power

The basic method

The cheap way of examining your electronics is to go around with a Killawatt or a Belkin Conserve Insight and plugging all your devices, one by one, into it and seeing how much power they draw. This is easy for something like a computer or a microwave, because you know exactly when they're on and off. But for something intermittent that cycles between drawing a lot of power and very little power, like a refrigerator or a water cooler, this is more difficult. But, using this, you can realize that?holy crap?my hot pot cooker uses 2,000 watts. Or that maybe it's really not a good idea to leave your TV on when you're not using it.

The Batman method

If you really want to get serious about knowing exactly how much power use is going on?and I mean the kind of serious you get when you get a $300 bill in the mail, get an eMonitor from Powerhouse Dynamics.

Traditional smart meter solutions that hook up to your meter?which are difficult or impossible to install if you live in a multi-unit complex or an apartment?can only tell you how much power your entire house is using as a whole. That's better than no information, but it renders it hard to narrow down the energy hog to an appliance level unless you constantly go around with a Killawatt and measure. The eMonitor installs onto the circuit level, so you can get a room-by-room readout. The only way you could get any more detailed is if there were Killawatt type measuring tools on each individual outlet that fed wirelessly into a central place that consolidates all this data. As far as I know, this doesn't exist yet.

How I Cut My Energy Bill By a Third with Tech and Common SenseI'll explain the home screen of the eMonitor webapp. It's hard to make sense of it as a whole, so I'll break it down into pieces.

You can see that my office is drawing the most right now, because my computers are on, as is my cable modem and wireless router. The refrigerator is in one of its higher power cycles, which explains why it's coming in at second, and there's a computer on in the living room, punching it up to 143 watts. Usually this idles at about 100, which includes a TiVo, another Wi-Fi router and a home automation system. Everything else is effectively unplugged.

The other rooms have a small, constant power draw for things like clock radios, more Wi-Fi routers, appliances, security systems, and even this eMonitor setup. You could technically classify these as phantom power draws, but you're not going to unplug your clock radio every morning, and stuff like security systems are just things that you need to have on constantly.

How I Cut My Energy Bill By a Third with Tech and Common SenseThe second chunk tracks my last 30 days of power consumption. The living room and office are two obvious rooms with giant power usage, because my computers and my television are there, and that's where most of the day is spent. The AC, however, comes in third and fourth, because it's on two circuits. So together, it's used about a third of the total power for the last 30 days. And that's with me not turning on the AC at all for the last ten! I am ashamed of myself. That's the kind of wasteful behavior you can settle into if you stop paying attention.

How I Cut My Energy Bill By a Third with Tech and Common SenseBut the good news is that the bill estimate for this month is already dramatically less than last month, and I've only been trying to save power for about 10 days now. The first 10 days of July are still shameful, but I'm proud of the last 10. Part of that is me not using the AC, but it's also me eliminating useless power consumption.

How I Cut My Energy Bill By a Third with Tech and Common SenseIf I keep on this new low-energy diet, the August month will be the lowest I've ever had since the installation of the eMonitor at the end of September (which doesn't count).

What's also great are the historical charts, which can also be shown on a circuit by circuit view to help you figure out what's sucking down the most juice. Each circuit can also be clicked on to see a historical view as well, or if you just want to monitor it closely in real time. The chart updates once a minute, but you can bypass that and go directly to your local eMonitor's IP address and see exactly what it's using right now via its tiny web server.

Although the eMonitor is unbelievably powerful, it's also quite expensive. A 12 circuit monitor (what I have) will cost $688. A 24 circuit monitor, for large houses, costs $948. This is steep, but if you manage to cut down your power by $50 a month?and be able to keep it down, because you can set alerts and monitor when appliances use more than they should?you'll make that back within a couple years. It's also very useful for people who have solar panels, because it can keep track of your power generation as well.

Trust me, when you're trying to cut your power use down, you'll be religiously monitoring the site throughout the day to keep a constant eye on what's using what. You'll also know exactly when the other people in your household start showering, watching TV, doing laundry or engage in any other electricity-intensive activity (and then yell at them for it).

What do I do with all this information?

Once you have the eMonitor installed, the first step is to identify devices in rooms that are using too much power while off. Start unplugging things and see how that affects the power consumption for its circuit. For example, some televisions and receivers and game consoles still draw a considerable load when powered down because they're keeping part of their circuitry on, even in the off state. You'll want to unplug these when you're not using them, or use the lamp timer or smart power strip methods I explain later.

You can also start turning on electronics and seeing if something is insanely inefficient. Buying a new iron for $15 because your old one uses that much more in electricity in a year would be a good possible outcome. The mentality applies for the rest of the small-ticket appliances like hairdryers, toasters and coffee makers.

You'll also be able to see how much power your lights are drawing compared to your other electronics, and you'll immediately want to swap out your bulbs for more efficient ones, which I explain next.

The key is that once you know exactly what's drawing power in your house, you can start doing something about it.

The technical solutions

Switch your light bulbs to more efficient ones

How I Cut My Energy Bill By a Third with Tech and Common SenseLike I said earlier, a 60 watt incandescent bulb uses 60 watts, or 0.060 kWh per hour, whereas the a compact fluorescent equivalent uses 13 watts, and a Philips LED bulb uses 12.5 watts. The chart should quickly outline the good and bad of each type of bulb.

Notes

1 Average life for a GE and a Sylvania CFL bulb on Amazon. Wikipedia lists the average life as somewhere between 6000 to 15000, but the more common bulbs are 8000. And "average" life is the point at which half the bulbs at this age are dead, and half are still functional.
2 Average life for the Philips Ambient LED bulb, the one tested for this post. According to the Energystar website (PDF), most bulbs are coming in at about 25000 hours, with some at 50000 and a handful down at 15000. Like CFL, this is the point where half the bulbs would likely be dead and half would not.
3 There are CFL bulbs that are dimmable, but they are four times as expensive, and do not dim well. Complaints on Amazon say they're maximum brightness, down to about 80%, and then off.
4 Energystar rebates exist for LED lights, and you can search the site with your local zip code to see if your power company has any. Mine did not.

For most instances, you're going to want to go with a CFL, because it's cheap, drawing only slightly more power than an LED, and has a reasonably long life. An LED wins out in the cases where you're replacing an incandescent in the bathroom, where you want the lights to come on at max brightness instantly, or when you want to be able to control your brightness from a dimmer. But if you're talking living room lamps or dining/kitchen lights, where you'll physically be there for a while, a CFL works just fine. Those of you lucky enough to rebate the price down from $45 a bulb might find the 3x long lifetime and slightly decreased power consumption worth it for rooms where you want to keep the light on all the time as well.

Here's a simple calculation that illustrates my point. If you keep a 60 watt bulb on for 12 hours a day, every day of the month, it would cost you about $2.77. A CFL used under the same conditions would cost $0.60. The difference there is already enough to cover the purchase of a new bulb, for just one month's use.

You should also think about whether you really need 100 watt bulbs everywhere. I, for one, know how satisfying it feels to install one, fill up a room and really blow my retinas out. But unless you're performing delicate visual work all the time or trying to illuminate a large room, you can most likely make do with a 60 watter. Even 75 watt bulbs are plenty bright most of the time.

Use a lamp timer to keep stuff on only when you need it

I have two water coolers, one in my office and one in the kitchen so that I can have hot or cold water at any time. But if I think about it, how likely is it that I'm going to be in both places at the same time? Or, that I'm going to need cold water while I'm asleep?

Take a $10 lamp timer ($6 if you use it for non-grounded, two-prong plug items) and you can specify exactly what times of the day you're likely to be using this. For the office cooler, I'm only really going to need water from it between noon and 5PM. For the kitchen cooler, it's 7AM to 9AM, then 6PM to midnight. By doing this, I've shaved 80% use time off one and 66% off the other. Sure, it takes a little more power to get the water to optimal temperature when they first start up, but that's less than keeping it on the entire day.

You can extrapolate this lamp timer usage to appliances that you use every day and don't want to unplug all the time, but only need part of the day. Are you going to use your internet connection while you're asleep (if you don't Torrent)? Put your cable modem and router on a lamp timer. Do you ever really watch any shows your TiVo records from 2AM to 9AM? Or need your stereo when you're at work or asleep? Take a look around your house and see what devices you use every day, but only for parts of it, that would be annoying to unplug manually.

Use a smart power strip that knows when to turn everything off

If you think about it, there's little reason for your Xbox, PS3, receiver or subwoofer to be on when your TV is off. Likewise, why would your computer speakers, external USB backup drive, and monitor need to be on when your computer is not? Grab a smart power strip, like the Belkin Conserve Smart AV, that kills power going to five other devices when the main device?your TV or computer?is shut off. If you often listen to music with your receiver on and your TV off, you could make that the primary device as well.

And if you're forgetful, you could combine this with the lamp timer method to make sure that your "main" devices?the ones that kill everything else?are off when you go to bed.

An alternate method is to get a power strip with a remote, like these two Belkin models, which gives you the plug/unplug functionality without physically going and doing it.

Use a charger that knows when your devices have had enough

You could also use a special Conserve Valet that charges four USB things at once. This thing knows when your device has drawn enough power to fill up, and then automatically cuts off the charging to eliminate phantom power drain.

I've found that the Valet is not that, practically speaking, because when you're charging your phones, iPods and Kindles, you expect them to be charged when you unplug them, whether it's 3 hours later or a day later. But if you're vigilant about charging your devices, this is a decent solution to only draw as much power as absolutely necessary.

Do I really need to do all these things?

Installing an eMonitor and knowing exactly how much power each gadget in your house uses may be a little extreme if your electric bill is already reasonable. The eMonitor is expensive, despite its comprehensiveness, and I wouldn't expect many of you to actually install it. But, with a $20 Killawatt and the common sense lessons I learned from lowering my power bill, you should be able to cut at least a few bucks off yours.

Organisation can grow fast with proper change management ...

July 20, 2011, 6:22 am

Article by Aarika Rostogi

Human Resource Management is very important in any organization as it not only provides skilled and appropriate work force but also contribute towards the development of present working employees. Every Management Institute invariably provides education on different topics of Human Resource Management like Change Management and Corporate Governance. Other important topics under human resource management are Enterprise Agreements and Facilitation. Management students often consider human resource management as an organisation builder.

If any organisation has very little number of employees then there may be no need for a separate human resource management department but in the organisation where number of employees are considerably high, different issues related to human resource needs an answer. Often middle and large scale organisation relies over their human resource department to address such issues. Corporate Governance and facilitation are latest tools in human resource management to increase organisation?s performance and credibility.

Dispute is a natural human phenomenon and according to a well said phrase ?If any organisation has disputes then it is surly going to grow as employees are now thinking and fighting for what they think is right.? Many organisations take help of a third party to resolve their internal or external disputes more commonly known as facilitation. Enterprises take third party assistance or facilitation as decision made by facilitator is normally unbiased and easily acceptable to all the parties where decision made by internal staff leaves an impression of non satisfaction with a feeling of biased ness over the parties.

Facilitation is being used by many organisation as a decision making tool. Where internal groups and different office departments present their opinions and believe in front of facilitator and facilitator after listing to all the possible arguments come to a final decision. Many separate organisations provide the service of facilitation with minimum associated cost. Many people critic the process of facilitation as they doubt on the mental abilities of facilitator and show their non consent over the decision made. However capability of facilitator for arriving to a particular decision for a dispute completely depends on the experience and expertise level of the facilitator. Even a well experienced person may find it difficult to lend over a decision for a particular problem. Many facilitation service providers hire well experienced and knowledgeably sound people from different sections of the industry in order to make decision making process more fruitful and worthy.

Elder care - Choose Elder Care Services That Meet Individual Needs

There are a variety of elder care services that assist seniors in managing age-related issues. In the U.S. some of these options include adult day care, at-home elder care, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. Here is a look at these options to help you find the services that may meet your needs or the needs of your loved one.

Adult Day Care

Adult day care centers can be an excellent option to provide care and companionship for seniors during the day. Centers can be found as stand-alone services or as a part of a senior center, nursing home, church, school, or hospital. The costs will vary depending on the services offered.

In-Home Health Care

Home health agencies and private elder care providers can be utilized to engage needed services such as skilled nursing, home health aides, physical therapy, and more. This can be a good option for seniors who need assistance with daily tasks but are still able to live independently at home or with family members.

Assisted Living Facilities

These residential facilities offer personal care assistance and health care to seniors in a maintained environment that allows for more independence than a nursing home. Many provide skilled nursing care, memory care, and other medical services as needed. The level of care offered in assisted living facilities can vary widely so it?s important to examine each carefully to determine the one best suited for individual needs and desires.

Skilled Nursing Homes

Seniors who require constant medical care for either short-term rehabilitative care or long-term care are best served by skilled nursing centers. Some nursing homes are stand-alone and others also include assisted living facilities.

Every senior is different and has different needs. Knowing what options are available can help you to decide which option best meets those needs for the individual and those of the family.
