US fugitive wants to serve time in Portugal

In this photo released by Noticias de Colares on Thursday Sept. 29, 2011, U.S. fugitive George Wright is seen in a post office in Praia das Macas, Portugal in 2000. Wright was arrested Sept. 26, 2011 by Portuguese authorities at the request of the U.S. government after more than 40 years as a fugitive, authorities said. The FBI says Wright, who escaped the Bayside State Prison in Leesburg, N.J., in 1970, became affiliated with the Black Liberation Army and in 1972 he and his associates hijacked a Delta flight from Detroit to Miami. After releasing the passengers in exchange for a $1 million ransom, the hijackers forced the plane to fly to Boston, then on to Algeria. Wright is being held in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, pending extradition hearings. He has asked to be released while the extradition process goes forward, and the court handling the case is considering his request, according to U.S. officials. (AP Photo/Noticias de Colares)

(AP) ? The lawyer for a captured American fugitive said his client wants to serve the rest of his jail time in Portugal, but legal experts predicted Friday that U.S. prosecutors will "move heaven and earth" to get him back to the U.S. justice system.

Lawyer Manuel Luis Ferreira says George Wright, 68, deserves to serve the remainder of his 15- to 30-year New Jersey murder sentence in Portugal because he has lived in the country for decades, has a Portuguese wife and grown Portuguese children.

"If he has to serve, then he wants it to be here, which is his home," Ferreira told Portugal's TVI television.

U.S. Justice Department spokeswoman Laura Sweeney declined comment Friday on the defense counsel's arguments due to the pending extradition request against Wright. American lawyers who are experts on extradition, however, said they expect an intense effort by U.S. officials to ensure Wright's return after 41 years on the lam.

Justice Department lawyers "will move heaven and earth to get him back here, and I believe they will be successful. If they have to do it through diplomacy, they will do it through diplomacy," said Philadelphia lawyer Norris Gelman.

Gelman represented Ira Einhorn, who was extradited to the U.S. from France in 2001 and convicted of murder after fleeing abroad in 1981.

Wright broke out of the Bayside State Prison in Leesburg, New Jersey, on Aug. 19, 1970, after serving over 7 years of his sentence for killing a man in a 1962 gas station robbery. He was also part of a Black Liberation Army group that hijacked a U.S. plane to Algeria in 1972.

Wright was captured in a seaside village near Lisbon on Monday after authorities matched his fingerprint on a Portuguese identity card to one in the United States. Until his arrest, Wright spent decades living with his Portuguese wife and children in the hamlet with a cobblestone street near a stunning beach.

After an odyssey that spanned three continents, Wright is being held in Lisbon, pending extradition hearings. He has asked to be set free, a request that is still pending. If the U.S. wins the extradition request, Wright can appeal that decision to Portugal's Supreme Court and the country's Constitutional Court, a process that could take years.

Ferreira said Wright will oppose extradition on the ground that he fears reprisals for his past membership in the militant U.S. group.

The U.S. has requested extradition based solely on Wright's murder conviction, not any possible future charges from the plane hijacking or his New Jersey prison escape.

"He's already been convicted on the homicide charge, for which we are seeking his extradition, and faces the remainder of that sentence," Sweeney said.

Danielle Hunter, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey Department of Corrections, said there has been no talk so far of adding charges relating to Wright's prison escape.

But Douglas McNabb, a Washington-based lawyer who has defended people in extradition cases, said he expects the United States to add some charges related to the hijacking to make an example of Wright.

"This taints the U.S.'s image that someone could be gone and not found as long as he was," McNabb said.

Hijacking in the United States carries a possible penalty of life in prison, and Portugal does not allow people to be extradited if they will face more than the nation's maximum sentence of 25 years.

Under Portuguese law, citizens can serve sentences handed down in a foreign country in Portugal. But Portuguese officials say there is doubt about the validity of Wright's identification documents and whether he is a citizen like his wife and children.

A foreigner marrying a Portuguese is entitled to Portuguese nationality, but has to formally request it, and it is not known whether Wright did. In addition, his Portuguese residency card was under an alias, Jose Luis Jorge dos Santos, and listed his home country as Guinea-Bissau.

Ferreira said his client had been living openly in Portugal and even had a Facebook page.

"He wasn't running. He wasn't hiding," Ferreira told TVI.

The United States, meanwhile, confirmed that Wright's Portuguese wife had worked as an occasional freelance translator for the U.S. Embassy in the West African nation of Guinea-Bissau from 1984 to 1990. Wright himself did not work for the embassy, U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Friday.

In the 1980s, Wright lived openly under his real name with his wife in Guinea-Bissau, a former Portuguese colony, and even socialized with U.S. embassy officials there. A former U.S. ambassador told The Associated Press he knew Wright then but had no idea he was a fugitive.

Andre Cameron, an American friend of Wright's for the past 20 years in Portugal, told the AP he was stunned by this week's revelations about Wright's hidden past.

He described Wright as a regular church-goer and said Wright's sister, who he said lives in North Carolina, visited her brother about three times in Portugal, most recently several years ago. He declined to give the woman's name or her hometown to spare her from intense media attention about Wright's case.

Fresh clashes, explosions rock Yemeni capital (AP)

SANAA, Yemen ? Heavy gunfire and explosions rocked the Yemeni capital on Thursday as clashes between government troops and rival tribesmen erupted anew Thursday, leaving at least three people dead.

The fighting started early in the morning in Sanaa's Hassaba neighborhood, spilling over into nearby streets in the capital. Hassaba is a stronghold of Yemen's most powerful tribal confederation, the Hashid, led by Sheik Sadeq al-Ahmar who has sided with the opposition calling for the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Yemen has been rocked by seven months of near daily mass protests demanding the overthrow of Saleh's regime, plunging the impoverished nation into deep political crisis. Armed tribesmen and defecting military units who support the protesters have joined the fray in a dangerous escalation that has raised prospects of a civil war.

The office of the tribal chief al-Ahmar said two of his brother's personal guards, were killed and five others were wounded in Thursday's clashes. Those killed were the guards for Himyar al-Ahmar, deputy speaker of parliament.

One artillery shell struck a house in Sanaa's Soufan neighborhood close to Yemen's state television building, wounding two people, said Mohammed Younis, a resident of the area.

Younis said he heard ambulance sirens but the narrow alleys and government checkpoints in the area prevented the ambulances from reaching the wounded. Columns of smoke and fire were billowing from the area, Younis said.

In Hassaba, fighting was continuing between elite Republican Guard troops led by Saleh's son Ahmed and the soldiers of al-Ahmar, the tribal chief.

Several streets around Hassaba, Soufan and other areas in Sanaa were empty because of the violence, and almost all shops and government offices were closed. Checkpoints from rival sides prevented people from entering some areas.

The officials said fighting around the Hassaba area has calmed down due to mediation by the U.S. and European ambassadors with both sides.

Despite the violence, protesters found alternate streets around Sanaa to hold their daily march on Thursday, calling for Saleh to go. Scores of women and children were seen among the protesters. "We need safety ... but Saleh is pitiless," shouted the crowd.

There were similar demonstrations Thursday in other Yemeni cities and towns, including Damar, Ibb, Saada and Bayda.

In the southern city of Taiz, one person was killed and five others wounded after Republic Guards forces randomly shelled three areas in the city.

Activist Ahmed Ghilan said the shelling destroyed four houses, two of them belonging to former members of parliament. Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets protesting the shelling and calling for Saleh's ouster.

Also Thursday, military officials said 18 al-Qaida linked militants were killed in the past 24 hours fighting and bombing of their hideouts in Hassann valley, northeast of Zinjibar, the capital of southern Abyan province.

Militants seized large swaths of Abyan several months ago and are implementing strict Islamic sharia law in the areas under their control. On Wednesday, security officials and witnesses said one of their firing squads executed Fathi Baduman in northern Zinjibar after convicting him of killing a Yemeni man, Ramzi al-Uqub.

The officials and witnesses Mahmoud Abdullah and Mahmoud Faraj said the militants cut off the hands of two people accused of robbery in the nearby town of Jaar, which is also under the militant control.

Using a European Lease to Finance a Boat

If there is a single concept which has revolutionized the car industry in recent years, it is the idea of leasing a vehicle rather than owning it. Nowhere has this been seen more dramatically than in the business sector where leasing is now the standard for car ownership.

Leasing for boats has been available in Europe for several years, but it is a purchasing option that is little understood by the boating community in general, and particularly in the UK, despite the fact that it can offer significant VAT advantages whether the vessel is used for private or commercial use. The two most popular schemes are those used in Italy and France.

At the time of their introduction, both countries were suffering a decline in yacht manufacturing. In an effort to halt this decline, both governments introduced incentives for yacht owners to buy their vessels under leasing schemes, which provided significant VAT reductions. In addition, the schemes were based on the concept that the larger the vessel then the greater the saving, thus encouraging owners to buy larger boats.

The growth of yacht manufacturing in the Italian market in recent years has been spectacular, with a proportionate increase in leasing which was up 32% in Q1 of 2005, and now represents nearly 6% of all yacht financing.

Before explaining the details of these schemes, it is important to understand some of the concepts behind them, which should help to clarify some of the relevant issues.

Firstly, in simple terms, a lease involves a bank or finance house, buying the asset and then effectively renting it back to the client for an agreed period at an agreed price. This is defined as a transfer of services. At the end of the lease, the client has the option to buy the asset which then becomes a transfer of goods. For VAT purposes a yacht lease is a supply of services and is deemed to take place where the person who makes the supply is established: i.e. French bank in France, Italian bank in Italy etc.

Secondly, they are simple to set up and administer and can be in individual, joint, or company names. Finally, it is important to understand that there can be two VAT elements, namely the VAT on the purchase price and the VAT on the leasing repayments.

]]>

If we take the Italian scheme as an example, the Italian law states that VAT has to be applied to leasing repayments, only in relation to the time spent within EU waters. Given that it is impossible to determine this accurately, the Italian Revenue Agency (along with the French & Maltese) has agreed that an assumed period can be applied to a leasing contract, based on certain criteria. Under the Italian scheme this is a combination of vessel type and size, so for a motor vessel over 24 metres in length, a rate of 6% VAT applies (30% of the standard Italian VAT rate of 20%)

In other words it has been assumed that a vessel of this size (24 metres plus) would spend 30% of its time in EU waters (ie the European summer for example) and outside EU waters for the remainder of the year (the Caribbean for example) The table below shows the various rates which have been agreed under the Italian leasing scheme:

Motor or sailing over 24 metres in length VAT: 6%

Sailing between 20.01 ? 24m VAT: 8%

Motor between 16.01 ? 24m VAT: 8%

Sailing between 10.01 ? 20m VAT: 10%

Motor between 12.01 ? 16m VAT: 10%

Sailing up to 10m VAT: 12%

Motor between 7.51 -12m VAT: 12%

Motor up to 7.5m VAT: 18%

Category D (protected waters only) VAT: 20%

The French leasing scheme is very similar and is based on the same principles of assumed time in EU waters. Their categories are based on the Class of vessel as shown in the Certificate of Registry. The French VAT base rate is 19.6%, and the minimum payable under the French system is 9.8% for a Class 1 vessel (50% of 19.6%)

The most recent country to introduce a leasing incentive is Malta, and with a lower VAT base rate of 18%, their rates vary from a minimum of 5.4% to a maximum of 18%.

Having covered the basic principles of what a leasing scheme is, and how it works, we can now consider the mechanics of acquiring a vessel using a European lease as follows:

Example ? Individual Purchase Of A New Boat From UK Broker/ Manufacturer

1.The client chooses the boat and agrees a price with the dealer/broker or manufacturer. 2.The client agrees a deposit and lease period with the bank. 3.The bank pays for the boat. 4.The boat is leased to the client who pays installments at the reduced rate depending on the scheme, vessel type and size. 5.At the end of the contract the bank sell the yacht to the client at the agreed 1% residual value. Full rate VAT applies to this payment as this is a transfer of goods. 6.The boat is now VAT paid.

The above example is for an individual (or group of individuals) purchasing a boat using a European leasing scheme. In two cases it is possible to have a VAT free lease as follows:

? A charter business buying a vessel which is used 100% for chartering in EU waters.

? An individual buying a vessel for use 100% outside EU waters

Detailed below are some of the main features of the leasing schemes:

? Leasing facility available from 300,000 euros ( no maximum )

? Initial deposit between 20% and 50%

? Lease maturity from 3 to 8 years

? Residual value 1%

? Available for both private and company ownership

? Available for both new and used boats

? Registration in virtually any country and any flag

? UK flag is available under the scheme

? Chartering is permitted within the lease agreement

As a specialist marine financial services broker, we are receiving an increasing number of enquiries from both the UK and Europe to arrange leasing schemes with our European banking partners. The schemes are straightforward to arrange and administer, and can offer significant savings in VAT. As a company we also offer a wide variety of more conventional marine mortgages as we believe that whilst leasing offers many advantages, this may not be appropriate for all our clients.

(AP) ? Chris Christie isn't running for president but says he's listening to those who want him to. Donald Trump opted out of a bid for the Republican nomination but hasn't ruled out running as an independent. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's aides are courting New Hampshire activists. And Sarah Palin says she'll decide soon whether to join the field, even as she worries the White House might be "too shackling."

Welcome to The Big Tease, when political stars stoke the hopes of supporters by hinting they just might join the presidential fray.

A few do succumb to the temptation ? most recently Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who joined the GOP field in August after months of insisting absolutely he had no interest. Others milk their moment in the spotlight, boosting their national stature, broadening their fundraising base and laying the foundation for a possible future run.

It happens in many presidential years. Democrats swooned, for a while, for New York Gov. Mario Cuomo in 1992; there was a Gen. Wesley Clark boomlet in 2004 and a drumbeat around former Republican Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee in 2008.

Cuomo stayed out, but his prolonged indecision earned him the nickname Hamlet on the Hudson. Clark and Thompson both jumped in late, only to flame out quickly.

Perry, for his part, has already learned the perils of a late entry.

After joining the race with great fanfare and rocketing to the top of the polls, Perry's shaky performance in two nationally televised debates have left many GOP activists worried he isn't prepared to be the party's standard bearer against President Barack Obama. But many also remain skeptical of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. He's had a relatively smooth run this time after losing the nomination in 2008, but he still hasn't fired up much passionate support.

All of which explains why Christie mania was at full boil Tuesday, when the New Jersey governor delivered a long-planned speech at the Reagan Presidential Library in California.

He turned in a stinging indictment of both parties' leadership in Washington. And while he restated his refusal to enter the race, he told a woman begging him to reconsider that he was "touched" by her plea.

"The reason has to reside inside me," he said. "My answer to you is just this: I take it in, and I'm listening to every word of it and I feel it."

Palin, the former Alaska governor who was the GOP vice-presidential nominee in 2008, was also pressed on her presidential ambitions Tuesday in an interview on Fox News. She said ? again ? she hadn't made a decision, but did indicate she had concerns about going forward.

"Is a title worth it? Does a title shackle a person?" Palin asked. "Are they ? someone like me, maverick, you know, I do go rogue, and I call it like I see it, and I don't mind stirring it up. ... Is a title and is a campaign too shackling?"

Ari Fleischer, a former press secretary for President George W. Bush, said it's "plain and simple too late" for anyone to join the GOP field. But he said different candidates have different reasons for keeping the speculation alive.

"Chris Christie has a future and needs to be protective of his future. All this interest helps him raise money for Republican candidates and enjoy one last flirtation," Fleischer said. "Palin beats to a different drum, so this just keeps her in the game longer. She likes being the center of attention and the focus."

Choosing A Home Based Network Marketing Business | eportalsite ...

Choosing A Home Based Network Marketing Business

Article by Obinna Heche

In order to be successful in network marketing, you have to promote the marketing plan of the organization. That brings up another question, because even though you are promoting a business plan, are you not also promoting a product line? As part of the network, you are indirectly promoting the product line while directly promoting the concept of joining the organization.

That means, of course, that you have to have a product in which you believe. You are certainly not going to fare well in a network that distributes ABC Vitamins if you have tried them without success but feel great using Moms Natural Vitamins. That does not mean that within a multi level marketing organization with many products that you will never find a product you do not like but you want to avoid setting yourself up for failure by joining an organization whose entire basis is a product that you will not use.

That being said, when you begin to look around for the organization with which you desire to affiliate, make sure that you choose one whose products you would be willing to use. The basis of network marketing is, by definition, using your own products and teaching others to do the same. Does that mean you should never sell any of the products directly? No, of course not, that would be ludicrous thinking but you want to concentrate your efforts on recruiting new people for the network and making customers of those who are not interested in being individual business owners.

Based on that premise, your choice of an organization is quite pertinent to the success of your business venture, so you want to take some time making your choice. Many of the network marketing organizations on the Internet have a tendency to provide quite detailed informations, all you have to do is sign up on their website so that they know you visited and they will send you many different forms of communication. Read over everything before you make a final choice so that you know you made the right choice.

You also want to review the business plan of each organization as well as any initial investment or monetary requirements. For example, about eight years ago a network marketing organization online required you to purchase at least in products each month in order to be eligible for any bonuses. They built your downline for you but in order to be considered active, you had to spend a month.

It was a huge multi level marketing group, that might have been fine, but it was a limited product line with health and dietary products, so it would be difficult for the average person to spend that kind of money every month. These are, however, the kind of things of which you must be aware as you conduct your research and choose a network marketing organization with which to work.

Explosions kill 10 people in holy city in Iraq (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Back-to-back bomb blasts ripped through one of the holiest cities in Shiite Islam Sunday, killing at least 10 people in a community still reeling from a deadly bus hijacking earlier this month that left Iraq's Shiites again feeling hunted.

Four explosions struck the city of Karbala over a five-minute period, government officials said, sending thick black smoke over the city. Two of the bombs targeted an Interior Ministry office that issues ID cards. Another struck near a house, shredding its walls and ceiling. And one of the explosions went off half a mile from an important gold-domed shrine.

"Once again, the terrorist enemies of both Iraq and humanity have committed a new crime against the innocent people of Karbala," said Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite.

He called the bombings a "heinous crime," and promised those behind them and the earlier attack on the bus would be punished. He also warned people not to be drawn back into sectarian revenge killings.

"We should stay united and cease statements or acts that would help the criminals in their efforts to ignite sedition," al-Maliki said.

Ferocious bombing attacks by Sunni insurgent groups like al-Qaida in Iraq targeted the Shiite community whose leaders came to power after the fall of Saddam Hussein. The bloodshed pushed the nation to the edge of civil war.

Violence in Iraq has fallen dramatically since the bloodletting of 2006 and 2007, but militant attacks still appear aimed at re-igniting the nation's volatile ethnic and religious divide.

The Sept. 12 bus attack targeted Shiite pilgrims from Karbala who were headed to a shrine in neighboring Syria.

The gunmen stopped the bus at a fake checkpoint in the western desert of Anbar province, heavily populated by Sunnis and once one of the heartlands of the insurgency.

The assailants pulled 22 men from the bus and shot them execution-style, leaving the women and children weeping beside a remote highway.

Al-Maliki has been trying to tamp down tensions between officials in Karbala and Anbar since the highjacking. Four suspects are being held in the case, and al-Maliki's military advisers say at least some foreigners were among the plotters.

Sunday's bombings in Karbala were meant to raise tensions further, officials said.

"The aim of these explosions is to ignite the sectarian sedition after the killing of 22 Karbala residents in the Anbar desert two weeks ago," said provincial councilman Hussein Shadhan al-Aboudi. "They also aim to destabilize the security situation in Karbala."

Besides the 10 people killed, dozens were injured. Estimates ranged from 40 to as high as 110. The casualty figures were provided by three government officials: al-Aboudi, fellow councilman Mohammed al-Moussawi and parliamentarian Jawad Kadim al-Hassnawi.

Raed al-Assali, a government employee in the Karbala Investment Council, said he was sitting in his office doing paperwork when he heard the booms.

"I rushed to the rooftop of our building and I saw thick smoke rising from the blast area," al-Assali said. "Some people in panic were running in the nearby alleys in order to escape fire and danger."

Al-Assali noted growing tensions and fear by Karbala residents that they are being targeted by Sunni insurgents.

"There's a feeling here that some groups are trying to ignite sectarian sedition by targeting Karbala after the crisis with Anbar," he said, referring to the slaying of the pilgrims.

Karbala, located 55 miles (90 kilometers) south of Baghdad, is one of the holiest cities in Shiite Islam because two early Muslim leaders, imams Abbas and Hussein, are buried there.

The bus attack alarmed Iraqi and U.S. security officials who are uneasily watching to see if stability will plummet while the American military continues withdrawing from the country. Under a 2008 security agreement, all U.S. troops are required to be out of Iraq by the end of the year.

But concerns about leaving behind partially trained Iraqi forces have spurred Washington and Baghdad to reconsider the deadline, although no agreement has yet been reached to keep U.S. troops in Iraq beyond 2011.

Rays top Jays to keep heat on Boston

David Price, Ben Zobrist

updated 6:21 p.m. ET Sept. 25, 2011

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Tampa Bay Rays are focusing on their playoff push rather than the shocking slide of the Boston Red Sox.

B.J. Upton and Ben Zobrist homered in the first inning to back Wade Davis, and the Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2 Sunday to pull within a half-game of the Red Sox for the AL wild-card lead.

"It's more about the ascension of the Rays right now," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "Obviously, they're struggling a bit, and that happens. But from our perspective, it's more important what we do. It's fortuitous that they've had a hard time, but I love the fact that we're taking care of business."

Evan Longoria and Kelly Shoppach also homered for the Rays, who have closed despite going just 14-10 in September.

Nine games back of the Red Sox heading into play on Sept. 4, Tampa Bay would move into a tie for the wild-card lead if the Yankees completed a sweep of Boston in their day-night doubleheader.

"The more pressure you put on yourself, the tougher it is to play baseball, which is probably what the Red Sox are doing right now," Davis said. "There's probably a lot of pressure on them. They're playing tense and they're not playing their game. As long as we can stay relaxed and understand our position, we can just keep it going."

No major league team has overcome a nine-game deficit in September to claim a postseason berth. The closest was the 1964 World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, who trailed the Philadelphia Phillies by 8 1-2 games on Sept. 3.

Tampa Bay closes at home against the Yankees, while the Red Sox play at Baltimore.

"I know we have a tough team coming in, and we really have to play well," Tampa Bay's Johnny Damon said. "It'll be a tough go, but I think we're feeling good about ourselves and fortunately for us, there's no off-day.

Davis (11-10) allowed two runs and three hits in eight innings, and Joel Peralta finished for his sixth save in eight chances. The Rays have won 27 games in a row when scoring five runs or more.

Toronto's Jose Bautista, the major league leader with 43 homers, bruised a spot just below his left knee on Zobrist's first-inning homer, hitting the right-field fence hard while attempting to make a catch. Mark Teahen hit for Bautista in the sixth inning.

"It's sore right now," Bautista said. "It started getting more sore and stiff to run. It was hurting when I was running."

Blue Jays manager John Farrell doesn't expect Bautista to play in Monday night's game at the Chicago White Sox. The slugger hasn't ruled himself out from playing again before the regular season ends Wednesday.

"We feel like we dodged a bullet," Farrell said. "It could have been something much more severe. There's a little bit of a gap in that padding out there, and there's a little bit of exposed metal and that was the impact."

Upton homered with one out, and Zobrist hit an inside-the-park homer to right with two outs, also off Brett Cecil (4-11).

David Cooper had an RBI double in the second, but Longoria's two-run homer made it 4-1 in the third. He has driven in 82 runs over his last 95 games.

After Toronto's Dewayne Wise had a solo homer in the fifth, Shoppach hit a sixth-inning shot.

Cecil gave up four runs and five hits in 3 1-3 innings. He is 0-7 with a 5.16 ERA in his last 10 starts.

NOTES: RHP James Shields (15-12), who leads the majors with 11 complete games this season, will start Monday night's game against the Yankees. He will be followed in the series by Jeremy Hellickson (13-10) and David Price (12-13). "Everything is lined up properly right now," Maddon said. "Let's just go out and play, and see what happens." ... Blue Jays CF Colby Rasmus was late scratch due to fulike symptoms. 1B Adam Lind, who left the team Friday for the birth of his child, missed his third straight game. ... Farrell will miss Monday night's game with the Chicago White Sox to be with his 20-year old son Luke, who is having scheduled surgery. ... Zobrist has four homers in his last eight games after going 39 games without one. ... Farrell said it's becoming more unlikely that SS Yunel Escobar (left elbow) will play again this season. ... Toronto RHP Dustin McGowan (0-1) and White Sox RHP Dylan Axelrod (0-0) will pitch Monday's series opener.

Selecting The Right Toronto Airport Limousine Service | Explicit ...

Traveling is a process that is frequently faced with a large amount of decisions to make and considerations to sort through. Many of the decisions to make are inclusive of deciding on how to reach their destination as well as any other transportation needs they may have. Travelers dealing with this decision should learn what is commonly considered when selecting a great Toronto airport limousine service.

Many travelers avoid parking at the terminal to help save on costs. A large percentage of travelers have found that using specific services to take them to and from the actual facility is much more convenient and cost effective in many cases. This specific type of transportation is often provided by limousine services available within the area.

Travelers flying in and out of Toronto have plenty of options to choose from when this service is being considered. These options are often considered a very complicated source of confusion in that they are all able to offer the exact same service in many cases. Making a selection is much easier when a few basics are factored into the process.

Travelers should be able to reserve their ride well in advance. Waiting to the last minute and simply calling them can cause a missed flight to occur as availability may be limited. Look for companies that offer advanced booking online.

They should also have a fleet of successfully maintained and cared for vehicles. Most people wish to ride in a comfortable and well maintained vehicle for safety and comfort reasons. Companies that keep their vehicles maintained are often considered the most reputable.

A Toronto airport limousine service should finally be as affordable as possible. There are many services that charge flat fees based upon the trip that is taken. Paying per mile can prove to be costly and should be avoided if at all possible. Read more about: toronto airport limousine

'All My Children' ends its run with a cliffhanger (AP)

NEW YORK ? Tissues were on hand but there were few tears among two dozen soap opera fans gathered to watch "All My Children" sign off from ABC on Friday after more than 40 years.

That's because the screen faded to black with a gunshot and a cliffhanger ? an indication that the story may not be dead, even if the television series is. ABC has licensed the story to a production company that is hoping to keep the "All My Children" going online after the first of next year.

Carolyn Hinsey, author of "Afternoon Delight: Why Soaps Still Matter," organized a watching party at a Manhattan sports bar as a message to television executives who apparently think soap operas don't matter anymore.

Two of ABC's three daytime dramas, "All My Children" and "One Life to Live," were canceled this year. That leaves only four soaps on network television, with "General Hospital" the only one on ABC when "One Life to Live" formally leaves in a few months.

TV executives consider soaps a losing cause, more expensive to produce than talk or reality shows and with a dwindling audience as more women work and their tastes change ? even though the ratings for ABC's two canceled programs have jumped in recent months.

"The soap fans are still there," said Marie White, who drove in from Baltimore for the party. "It's just that Nielsen doesn't count them."

Nielsen, the television ratings company, doesn't count White. She keeps up with her favorites online these days.

Partygoers booed loudly when ABC ran a commercial for "The Chew," the cooking show that will replace "All My Children" next week. They saved their loudest cheer for when Erica Kane, the soap's most memorable character, portrayed by Susan Lucci, learned she would not get married again ? at least not yet.

She saved her final words on television for a promise to keep pursuing her beau even after he told her to have a nice life ? without him.

The soap has been tying up loose ends for much of its final week. But the prospect that it could continue led to some last-minute script changes, Hinsey said.

The final episode ended with most of the show's characters gathered at the Chandler house in fictional Pine Valley, Pa., for a party ? celebrating engagements, a pregnancy and some miracle medical revivals. Yet the character J.R., riled because he lost his business and fortune and because his wife left to raise their baby son with a lesbian, lurked outside with a gun.

The series ended as he fired. Left unseen was who, if anyone, J.R. shot ? homage, perhaps, to the famous 1980 "Dallas" cliffhanger that became known as "Who Shot J.R.?"

That may depend on business off the television screen, Hinsey said. Actors who decide not to continue with the series online may, in retrospect, wind up being victims of the gunman, she said.

Prospect Park this week announced the first deals with show cast members to continue with the online production. Cameron Mathison, who plays Ryan Lavery, and Lindsay Hartley, who portrays Dr. Cara Castillo Martin, have agreed to continue.

Lucci's participation is still up in the air.

Asked by Hinsey, a handful of people at the Manhattan party said they rated the final episode an 8 on a scale of one to 10. Many said they had heard rumors that the ending was going to be much bloodier.

"I think it's better than the whole town getting shot up," said Christine Levitin-Breyette, a Manhattan woman at the party. "That wasn't so bad."

Some of the final episode's dialogue felt more like actors talking to viewers, or television executives, than as part of the story. One example was when actress Debbi Morgan spoke soon after her blind character, Angie Hubbard, had her sight restored.

"One day our family and friends will be gone and they won't be back," she said. "They'll be gone for good. What if that day were today?"

Grunge no more: Seattle's tourist transformation

Hard Rock Cafe

From grunge to mainstream: The Hard Rock Cafe in downtown Seattle opened in February 2010.

By Rebecca Ruiz, Senior editor, msnbc.com

Twenty years ago, Seattle was a quiet Northwestern city, notable for its timber and aviation industries as well as its starring role in the 1962 World?s Fair, where it unveiled the iconic Space Needle. But not much happened in the intervening decades to capture the nation?s imagination ? or the interest of travelers.

Then grunge happened. The emergence of the band Nirvana, and its angry punk-pop album ?Nevermind,? 20 years ago this month changed the city as a destination.

Story: Why Nirvana's 'Nevermind' spoke to a generation

In 1991, Seattle drew 6.1 million visitors who spent $1.6 billion. Since then, tourism has grown steadily, reaching 9.3 million visitors and $5.5 billion in spending last year. While grunge threw the spotlight on Seattle, the attention only grew as coffee culture and movies like "Sleepless in Seattle" and "Singles" gave the city color it didn?t have before, says David Blandford, vice president of communications for Seattle?s Convention and Visitors Bureau.

?When you look at the '90s and what came from some of those phenomena,? Blandford says, ?people began to understand what it was like to live here and visit.?

For several years, though, local politicians fought the thriving music scene through ordinances, afraid that its aggressive roots would tarnish efforts to portray Seattle as a world-class destination. ??The city leadership really didn?t like [grunge],? says James Keblas, director of Seattle?s office of film and music.

Anti-establishment residents weren?t clamoring for grunge to become a part of Seattle?s image, either. ?When grunge exploded, people really turned away from it here,? Keblas says. ??It?s taken a while for Seattle to own that identity and be proud of it and to capitalize on it in interesting ways.?

The Experience Music Project, which opened in 2000, is featuring an exhibit on Nirvana through April 2013.

That slow embrace is now a tight grip, making the city?s musical heritage a big part of any visit. The Experience Music Project, which opened in 2000 and has become a popular Seattle attraction, is named after one of Seattle native Jimi Hendrix?s bands. The pop music museum is marking the 20th anniversary of ?Nevermind? with a yearlong exhibition featuring Nirvana memorabilia and photography.

In 2005, the city introduced maps pinpointing historic music sites, including the Black Dog Forge, a blacksmithing studio where the bands Pearl Jam and Soundgarden rehearsed. Also on the maps are sites that recall the city?s musical history pre-grunge, like the Trianon Ballroom, which hosted jazz-era orchestras led by Vic Meyer and Gay Jones and the Black & Tan Club, a jazz club where Ray Charles, Charlie Parker and Duke Ellington performed.

Slideshow: Grunge bands of the '90s

Hotel Max

Hotel Max's door-sized image of Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder in a photograph taken by Charles Peterson.

The city?s musical legacy has become such an important part of luring tourists that the downtown boutique Hotel Max?decorated the doors on one floor with iconic images of grunge bands taken by local photographer Charles Peterson.

But if there?s a true benchmark of Seattle?s transformation into a conventional tourist destination, it?s the Hard Rock Caf? that opened in February 2010. The restaurant replaced a coin-operated peep show steps away from Pike Place Market. True to the city?s ethos of activism and originality, though, this franchise of the global chain features reclaimed wood and memorabilia from local bands and performers.

Seattle hasn?t just capitalized on its musical heritage in the past decade; it has also taken advantage of new cruise terminals. In 1999, the city?s port welcomed just 6,600 cruise passengers. In 2010, that number had reached 931,000, thanks to two new terminals, one opened in 1999 and the other in 2009. Each time a homeport ship docks, it contributes $1.9 million to the local economy, according to the Port of Seattle.

The city also has more to offer those visitors than it did 10-plus years ago. Randy Hurlow, vice president of communications and marketing for the Downtown Seattle Association, says a ?renaissance? began in the heart of the city starting in the early 1990s, which grew with an influx of money from employees at companies like Microsoft and Amazon.com. ?It started to snowball,? says Hurlow. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBCUniversal.)

Benaroya Hall, home to the Seattle Symphony, opened in 1998. That same year, the city?s voters approved an initiative to spend $290 million on the Seattle?s libraries; in 2004, the flagship library, formerly a concrete box, reopened as a steel-and-glass architectural marvel. Four years ago, the Seattle Art Museum opened a free waterfront sculpture park featuring works by Alexander Calder and Louise Bourgeois.

Add to that a downtown retail district that includes shops like Nike Town, Tiffany & Co. and Michael Kors as well as restaurants that are competitive with the best haunts in San Francisco, Chicago and New York, and the Seattle of 2011 might bear little resemblance to that of the grunge era.

But Hurlow isn?t worried that Seattle has lost the character that made it famous.

?I think we have some of the grittiness that cities are known for,? he says. ?It is still there and I don?t know if we ever want that to completely go away.?

Seattle has grown from pioneer settlement to economic powerhouse. Lonely Planet takes you to the highlights of The Emerald City.

Building the Future of Real Estate

Despite the amount of column inches have been devoted for the developing housing problem ahead of the United states of america, some economists predict that there are going to be a actually severe shortage of housing out there inside the near long term.

We have all heard the horror stories about the three million foreclosures, falling house values, rents and wilting of dozens of qualities on the market with few buyers willing or in a position to take a position. So how on earth cannot be considered a shortage? Properly, it appears, just are not sufficient new homes. Why, one wonders, do we need to build houses, so no one has to buy? And if there are actually entire sections of empty houses across the size and breadth of the nation, is certainly not required to add to this grim stock?

The solution apparently lies in the projected population development. It is an inescapable reality that population growth have to be accommodated and, according to some analysts, the current volume of attributes not merely meet your needs.

Meanwhile, other economic authorities say that basically building new homes won?t resolve the housing predicament, specially if they cannot manage to purchase them. If employment continues to say no in a lot of locations, more persons will lease and mix sources in multi-occupied dwellings. And when Americans adapt to some additional aware way of life of taxes, so you could say that they all call for the type of residence that a lot of aspire to right now? It partners can spend a house loan for any house with 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms? Possibly the house will be house to three generations from the family, so preferred somewhere else within the world? Less work opportunities, fewer men and women are equal having a guaranteed earnings that will result in less loans and residence gross sales in the lengthy phrase and less.

It seems that the emphasis in current a long time is to develop big homes, or pricey, high specification flats. And it really is specifically these characteristics that are at present tricky to discover customers in some areas. At the same time, in numerous parts with the nation, more compact, cheaper homes, and lofts are actively transferring, due to low interest rates and government incentives. As a result, is the fact that several of your desirable traits of huge, remained unchanged, regardless of decrease prices, although the low price, for the first time household buyer market, due to the fact desire is expanding, actually start to show increasing values.

Not surprisingly, the properties of the landscape seems to alter on the weekly foundation, and while the success tales carry on to improve in some areas from the industry, usually the image just isn?t so rosy elsewhere. Of course, the actual estate industry is experiencing considerable modifications, and will carry on to trip the storm in one way or a further. There are much more reflections of hope around the horizon, and you will find extra tales is often. Each part with the country has its personal story to inform, its winners and losers.

? When the website picks the articles, the websites will automatically get a partner for the web link.

? Linking in the web is one of the best factors that affect the rankings in search engines. The article must be useful and appealing, in order to have more websites publish it.
